Asus A8N-SLI Premium question

I'm currently using the onboard Lan device for the internet but I was wondering... under the bios it has NV Lan (which I have enabled and using) and onboard lan boot rom which is disabled. Do I need to enable it and what does it do?

Also regarding Cool'n'Quiet and Q-fan... should I enable these too?

I have AMD x2 4400+

And more questions (sorry!)... anyone know why when I have my D-Link DFE-550TX installed... windows crash/blue screens ONLY when I plug in my network cable to the card? If I leave the cable unplugged it sees the card fine and nothing happens. The card works fine in my older computer (asus p4b266). I even had the onboard lan disabled. Also I tried another card Netgear FA311.. worked fine browsing the web and what not. But when I used the blizzard bittorent patch downloader... it got about 15mb then crashed. This too is with the onboard lan disabled (also works fine in old computer). I'm guessing these are too old of cards to use?

Thank you very much in advance! 🙂

No, leave it disabled. LAN Boot ROM is only needed if you intend to boot off of a network device.

Cool'n'Quiet works by dynamically adjusting the multiplers (and therefore your CPU clock speed), but it doesn't always work as expected with dual core processors. If you're running stock, you can go ahead and turn it on. If you're overclocking at all, disable it.

Q-Fan is an ASUS's name for the technology that slows down the fans attached to the motherboard if the system is cool enough that they don't need to run at full speed. Go ahead and turn this on.

As for the third problem, If you installed the NVIDIA firewall (ActiveArmor), this has been known to cause headaches upon migraines. DON'T install it or the IDE driver. If it's already on, uninstall it.

It also wouldn't hurt to get the latest BIOS off Asus's site. 🙂

Thanks, I don't get what they are having in terms of download corruption. Just curious when I plug in a NIC card instead of using the onboard.

I know i didn't install the IDE but not sure about the firewall (ActiveArmor).. I don't think I did but is there a way to double check?

If 127.0.0.1:3476 (put it in your browser's address bar) brings you to the ActiveArmor Network Access Manager, then it's installed.

There might be an easier way to check, but I remember getting rid of it a day or two after installing it.

Thanks! looks like I'm set then. 🙂

Oh yeah, I forgot to ask. The latest bios from Asus is beta... should I ever install beta bios? I would assume no, but... just getting an idea for future knowledge. Also for Q-fan.. is there any real benefit other than maybe lowering the noise and maybe a tiny bit of power?
