ASUS A8N-SLI Premium build help (?)

Hi,

I am relatively new to building computers. I have built and maintained one computer priviously, but things change.

I have almost all the pieces I need for my system, but I wanted to ask what suggestions (other than get another or different "fill in the blank") anyone would have to make things go smoothly. I am showing my 11 year old daughter how to put it together and I would like it to run without blue screens, auto rebooting, hanging, conflicts, etc.

Any help or suggestions are welcome.

This is the system (it should be in my signature, but just in case):

ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI ATX AMD Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
OCZ Platinum Series 1GB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered
eVGA Geforce 7800GTX KO 256MB Video Card
Western Digital Caviar SE16 250GB 7200 RPM SATA II Hard Drive (x2) Maybe RAID 1
BenQ Black DVD Burner DW1640
LITE-ON Combo Drive Model SOHC-5236V
Logitech Cordless Desktop MX3100 Keyboard and Mouse
ThermalRock Eclipse Case
SeaSonic S12-600 ATX12V 600W Power Supply
Microsoft Windows XP Professional With Service Pack 2 (no comments please 🙂 )

The monitor is still on the way and so that is why I am asking before I assemble the computer and install the software.

One thing that I did notice is that the ASUS board needs an extra 4 pin 12V connector if I want to add another video card. Do you think that it would be possible to just split the connector to the two slots from the original?

Thanks. kltaylor.

Do you mean 6 pin connector or 4 pin for mobo? It's best if each is on a seperate lead.
Secondly, a system like that really needs 2 gb of ram to run at it's best, get 2x 1 gb sticks, otherwise you may drop to 2t or lower timings, and it will be harder to upgrade to 4 gb. Nice HD. I would not recomend RAID 1 in an end user aplictation, however RAID 5 is something to look at. I'm not a fan of the case, but if you like it...

Honestly, there isn't really anyway to prevent BSOD's or other problems on a fresh build other than to be carefull and to make sure everything is plugged in correctly. BSOD happens.

It is the 4-pin for the mobo. They call it the EZ PLUG, but I just read that

"If using a 20-pin ATX powerconnector, connect a 4-pin ATX power cable to the EZ PLUG labeled EZ_PLUG on your motherboard."

So maybe it is not needed since the PS has a 24-pin ATX power connector for the mobo.

Also, I do have 2x1GB Mem. sticks. I knew this from privious experience, DDR and all that.

The RAID is not really needed. All this is for is some data and mostly games. And I backup the data about once a month (there is not that much data). I just thought that a mirror would help cut-down on re-installing Windows.

I eventually will add a second card (when the price is lower).

So, if I go by what Tick said and should use a second 4-pin connector. Then I would need a different power supply.

So, the question remains, would a 4-pin split connector work for this?

OR do I need different PS with an extra 4-pin connector?
