The Asus A8N SLI has two LAN ports. Port one is controlled by the Nvidia chip and port two is controlled by a Marvell chip. If I am going to use only one port, does it matter which one? Is one preferable to the other? Should I disable the unused one in the BIOS? Also which drivers are used for these ports? The driver CD has a "Marvell Yukon Gigabit Ethernet Driver." Is this driver for port two only or for both ports. If it is for port two only, where is the driver for the Nvidia port?

I tried to return your PM. But your profile does not accept PM's. Change your profile

When I hooked up my Lan (over a month ago) I never got the NV port to work, and determined at that time there were no working drivers for SP2. I have since read that the Marvel port outperforms the NV port and has less CPU overhead so I haven't been looking for an updated driver.

The Marvel Yukon drivers on the CD, didn't work for me either, but the ones on the Asus website did? even though they appear to be the same drivers. I have been using the Marvel port ever since and it works great, and as long as you leave the NV port enabled in bios the "Active Armor" firewall works on the Marvel port as well

I have not had any good experiences with the NV LAN. IMO, it sucks bigtime! WTF is nVidia thinking? Furthermore, most of its settings can only be set via the Network Access Manager, which has way too much overhead including a runtime Apache server - WTF!

Marvell is the way to go. WinXP update has the latest drivers (even later than the drivers on Marvell's website).

GuitarDaddy, PM is fixed.

Well, thanks for the info guys. I am dealing with a couple of problems, the best of which is needing to download the latest drivers to get stuff to work but not being able to because of LAN probs. So, if I switch ports will I need to make a new internet connection with the connection wizard? (I have a cable modem and Linksys WRT54G.)

I don't think you will have to run the connection wizard. When your able to install the correct drivers that should be all thats necessary.

I used another computer to download the drivers and burn them to a disc

You don't need to make any kind of Internet connection within Windows with your setup. A cable Internet connection is always on. Just make sure your router spoofs the MAC address that your ISP wants to see. Perhaps it had been looking at the MAC address from your previous machine's LAN interface.

There are no new drivers for the nVidia LAN that I know of. Marvell has new drivers. And, as I mentioned earlier, XP update has the newest driver. You won't have a problem with the Marvell LAN. But, if I were you, I would avoid the NV LAN and definitely not install the NAM and NV Firewall.
