Asus A8N-E Premium: November 2004, $190-260
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe: December 2004, $260-325
Asus A8N-E Standard? (unannounced): 2005, $130-190

tomshardware.com
As our nForce4 Ultra sample did not exactly work as smoothly as expected, we asked the three big motherboard guys -- Asus, Gigabyte and MSI -- for their opinions on nForce4 availability.

Asus
Availability of nForce4 Ultra motherboards A8N-E (Premium/SLI):

second week of November
Asus is considering bundling two GeForce 6600GT graphics cards with the A8N-E SLI.

Gigabyte
nForce4 Ultra motherboards will be ready at the beginning of November. nForce4 SLI and VIA K8T890 will not be available before the beginning of December.
Product Name: Gigabyte 8 Sigma Series, e.g. GA-K8NXP-9 (NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra)

MSI
The K8N Diamond (featuring nForce4 SLI) is already slated to hit the shelves in late November. The product name might be changed to K8N Neo2 Extreme Edition in the US.
The K8N Neo4 Platinum will be the Ultra version, available two weeks earlier than the Diamond edition. It is supposed to be on the shelves by the middle of November.

A very basic question.

Looks like no AGP slot. Now I have a GAPX8 video card. Can I use it on this board?

As to PCIe, what kind of video card should be used? The old PCI one? Also, will this PCIe slot will boost other PCI device? Thanks.

Well if there is no AGP slot...it would be my GUESS that you cant use an AGP video card ;)

Look at the size of the slots... do you really think you can jam a PCI card into a slot ¼ its size?

No it will not boost performance.... yet.

Sorry for the rudeness but honestly it is simply common sense.

As I said, my question is basic.:)

So, PCIe boost is only for video card? Any other advantage?

Considering my AGP video card and also the price of PCIe motherboard, looks PCIe is not very important for me, at least at this time.

Thanks

the additional speed for peripherals will also be nice. The ENTIRE PCI bus has 133MB/s max bandwidth shared among all the slots. Just 1 PCIe slot has 250MB/s bandwidth, enabling high-speed peripherals without saturating the entire bus. This will come into play for people who want HD-Audio cards, TV Tuners, SATA-II controllers, etc.

Also, the feature set of nForce4 is better than any other chipset on the market, so if you want SATA-II, integrated gigabit ethernet with hardware firewall, cool overclocking stuff, great performance, cool RAID options like raid morphing and hot-swappable "spare" drives, or any of the other cool goodies, then nForce4 is the way to go.

The only speed boost you can get with a video card from PCI-E is to use 2 cards in SLI configuration.

PCI-E cards are no faster than AGP cards except that the newer PCI-E cards tend to have slightly faster memory. The PCI-E interface itself offers no speed advantage over AGP.

Wouldn't an SLI board with a pair of $200 video cards end up faster than a regular board with a single $400 card?

WOW! You need a 400gb drive? I've had an 80gb for quite a while and barely ever filled it half way.

What article in particular? I've been too busy with school and stuff to keep up to date.

Edit: I found one from October, 29th. Is that the one you were reffering to?

The 10/29 article works; there's also an earlier article with an nForce4 SLI reference board. The results are basically 6600GTx2=6800GT. SLI gets interesting when you start blowing big bucks on nice cards. Just remember that it doesn?t look like mix and match will work. It?s likely that cards will have to be the same type from the same vendor to work properly. Some limits, but it still want one. :D

My reasons are, a X800XT PCI-E is cheaper then 2 6800 GT's and a A8N SLI and I can use my ati artic silsncer 4 on it and keep my system silent. I also don't like Nvidias drivers, they always seem to mess up on games for me.

Oh ok. I think a 74gb raptor will be enough for me when I build a new box.

This is the Sil 3114 controller. I tried to get RAID 5 to work on a ASUS K8N-E Deluxe with the same controller. The RAID 5 support is a software solution and I could not get it to work. I managed to get RAID 1 (mirror) function from it but it was extremely slow.

Here's a challenge: try to find any review of the Sil 3114 controller functions! Nobody has reviewed them! And I promise you, those reviews would make big headlines.
