Asus A8N-Sli Deluxe networking troubles

Hi I am using the Asus A8N-Sli deluxe motherboard. It has 2 ethernet ports. One is named nVidia network controller and the other is from marvel yukon.

Recently I discovered that when I use the nvidia network controller my upload speed and download speed is capped at 320 KB/s even when transfering over LAN. Plugging the ethernet cable into the marvel yukon plug results in normal transfer speeds.

I have tried installing different nforce drivers but with no luck.

Is there some kind of setting which fixes this? As I am almost sure this has worked just fine before.

I am trying to figure what exactly is the difference between these two ports? Did not find much detail in the documentation.

I have only been successfull in connecting the Marvel-Yukon port to my network. No luck with the nVidia port.

I used the native nVidia network controller to connect to the internet, and the Marvel controller to connect to my 'separate' LAN

The firewall and active armor, which gives my system extra protection when surfing the web isn't needed in my 'separate' trusted LAN (where the WinXP firewall's disabled as well).

Check out the new Asus Intel SLI mobo released a few days ago. Notice how they have used AMD SLI version customers to revise the mobo. No whiney chipset fan. SLI led indicatore light...I'm sure they managed to make things very nice for their cash-cow Intel customers AFTER using us as lab-rats with their rush to market AMD SLI set-up.

Sounding a bit pissed??? You bet i am!!!

I am curious how about your Internet/LAN connections you mention.

I connect all PCs to a LAN Server. The Server then conects to a Router, and then the Router is connected to the Internet cable-modem. Therefore all PCs are LAN and Internet connected through the same Server/Router/Modem boxes. In your case, are you direct connecting to the Internet as one connection, and then a second, sepearate conection to the LAN interface?

I don't use internet connection sharing in my setup,

instead, each PC is connected to the internet via a multiport router using their native nVidia GLAN ports,

while at the same time, each PC is connected to a multiport switch using the Marvel GLAN, forming a separate, more secure LAN setup.

The differences are that the hardware for one port was manufactured by nVidia and the hardware for the other port was manufactured by Marvel. Beyond that, the nVidia port is a Gigabit ethernet port whereas the Marvel port is only 100 megabit. Since the average home broadband connection (cable or DSL) cannot saturate even the 100 megabit pipeline, it really shouldn't matter which one is used for connecting to the internet. The bottleneck will be the DSL or cable connection. Therefore, I would recommend, if you have a Gigabit ethernet router or something like that, use it to connect your home pcs together via the nVidia Gigabit port and use the Marvel 100 megabit port for your internet connection. That way you will maximize communication speed on your internal home network (provided all your other pc's also have gigabit ethernet) while delegating the slower port for the slower internet connection. For people having trouble with being capped at something like 320KB/sec on the nVidia port, have you tried configuring the nVidia adapter settings to always use 1000Mb Full Duplex rather than auto-negotiate and see if it changes anything?

Because I just enabled and started using the Marvel port on my A8N SLI Deluxe last night because I was having some internet connection oddities on my nVidia one and I wanted to see if it was the hardware or my cable company. After installing the drivers I went into the device configuration to set the speed of the Marvel LAN adapter away from the default of Auto-Negotiate and I don't recall seeing any option in there to set it to Gigabit or 1000 Megabit. It only went up as high as 100 Megabit Full Duplex.

I see, interesting. I did not realize this. Thanks for the insight. Although for me, I'm going to leave it set for 100Mbit full duplex as my router is only a 100Mbit router and a cable modem can never fill even that much bandwidth anyway.
