Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe Fails to boot

Guys,

I hope someone can help.
My configuration:

Asus A8N-SLI deluxe Mobo
AMD 64 4000+
Maxtor Diamondmax 10 (6B200M0) 200Gb S-ATA HD
1GB PC2700 DRAM
1 Phillips DVD+-RW
1 Samsung DVD-ROM
Floppy drive
Creative Audigy 5 Sound Card
Gainward 7800GT GFX Card
Hiper Modular 580W PSU

I currently have the DVD's chained on the Secondary IDE channel, as I am using SATA hard drive I don't have anything on the Primary IDE channel, is this ok or should I move the optical drives from the secondary to the primary?
The single S-ATA hard drive is connected to SATA1.
The BIOS has recognized all my hardware ok and I installed the NViDIA RAID Driver software during a fresh windows (with SP1) install. Windows installed ok but the problems started when I try and add any drivers (or any other software come to thinkn of it) to windows such as the nvidia chipset drivers that come on the supplied CD. The driver installs and I try and reboot the machine, during the boot sequence I get to the black windows screen with Windows Xp written on it and a scrolling bar across the bottom and the machine just gets stuck here. No matter how long I wait the boot sequence will not get past this screen. However, I can reboot in safe mode and apply the restore point just after the fresh install, the machine then boots ok.

This is really wierd, anyone have any ideas? I hope I have described the problem ok.

Thanks,

Lee

Edit: Added hard drive version number

well the only thing i can think of , is there seems to be some major issues with maxtor drives and the nf4 sata controller. I've read alot of stories on other websites and this one documenting it. I have the same problems, so my windows installation is on an ata 133 drive. I would continously have boot errors and the only thing that worked for me was , after shut down i would go inside the case and move the sata cable to another connector.

Thanks guys, I can't believe I bought the mobo and didn't spot the incompatibility issue with Maxtor drives. I have an old IDE hard drive at home I will try and if that works I'll move back to IDE for this machine.

Guys,

If the incompatibility issue is with the nvidia SATA controller then can I use the Silicon Image controller instead. I am using a single S-ATA drive in a NON-RAID setup. Can I operate in non-raid on the Silicon image controller?

Wolfy I am having the exact same problem and I have the Maxtor 200gb DiamondMax with the EVGA SLI MB. I am about to give maxtor a call or newegg for a full refund and buy a different hdd.

Boy I hope this isn't the case with maxtor drives. I'm getting today an AMD x2 4200+, 2x 7800gt SLI, Asus A8N Premium. My existing drive is a Maxtor 250gb NCQ SATA (6L250S0) that I'm going to put back in. I'll keep my fingers crossed during installation. :-(

Update:

1: dball3, u were right, I can't boot from the silicon image controller

2: I stuck in my old IDE HD, which happens to be a maxtor diamondmax 9, and the machine is ticking along nicely, I am actually posting on it now 🙂

I am undecided whether to buy another SATA or a new IDE drive due to the problem I had with last one. If I do buy an SATA one it definitley wont be a maxtor, can I trust other SATA drives sucj as Western Digital, etc, with the nforce4 SATA controller? Any recommedations?

Current state of the problem for other A8N-SLI owners, DO NOT USE MAXTOR DIAMONDMAX 9/10 SATA HARD DRIVES!

the difference between the ata 133 and the sata isn't that bad, i plan on picking up a new non-maxtor sata drive in the future. I have my sata drive on the nvidia controller , non boot ofcourse and it works great with just data and other stuff, but when i had it as the boot drive i would constantly get ntoskrnl errors during boot up. And seagate just purchased maxtor so i hope they get everything cleaned up.

Update:

Bought a 300Gb Samsung ata 133 hard drive today, I was totally fed up with the SATA problem and didn't want to take the chance that the same problem would show up on another drive. I'm annoyed that my upgrade required a new hard drive as I wasn't planning on upgrading that at the moment so I'm euro 300 over budget between the hard drive and a new PSU.

Good luck guys and stay away from those Maxtor's!
