2 CD-R devices plugged into the supplied IDE cable into IDE Channel 1.
The manufacturer states to plug the black ended cable into this port for IDE HD/CD-R master/slave devices.
On boot I get this error message after the POST test:
IDE Channel 1 no 80 conductor cable installed
The system continues to boot without (usualy) incident.

Both devices are set acordingly (Master 1st., Slave 2nd.) and are seen by windows and appear to work, although I have not tried burning yet.

When I remove the cable end from the mother board I don't get this error message

ASUS A8N SLI Deluxe ROM bios 1008, using default setup parameters excect I turne off the Sil RAID which I don't use.

1) of the three plugs on the cable, one is further from the other two. Plug that one into the motherboard.

2) use an 80-wire cable if you aren't already: second photo on this page shows difference Maybe one of your optical drives is an ATA/66 model, there are some out there.

The plug furthest on the cable is the one in the motherboard, the cable is the 80 pin cable that came bundled and it is tagged "ASUS CD-ROM Cable"

I don't know if the optical is ATA/66 but the IDE support on the board is supposed to work with ATA/66

I had the 80 pin cable error message when I first installed my comp. I had 1002 back then, when I flashed to 1008 the problem was still there, and then I found the 1011 and it fixed my problem.
