ASUS A8N SLI - Corrupted Installation of nv Firewall [Resolved]

Below is a thread that helped me resolve a problem installing nv firewall on my ASUS A8N SLI mobo. Here's a summary:

Symptoms: When installing nv Firewall the installer completes but gives the following four errors:
FAILED TO COPY TO C:\PROGR~1\NVIDIA\NETWOR~1\BIN\FW_WATCH.EXE
COULD NOT COPY APP_POPUP.EXE
COULD NOT COPY APPFLTUI.DLL
COULD NOT RUN NTRAYFW.EXE

Resolution: Download the files from here. Unzip them to <nv firewall install root>\bin (typically c:\program files\nvidia corporation\networkaccessmanager\bin). Then run "regsrv32 AppFltUi.dll" from a command prompt in the bin directory.

Special shoutouts to xtknight who was so helpful and to sgeo who found the missing piece of the jigsaw.

Original thread is below.

Hi,

Edit - xtnight very generously obliged. I have posted the files here. Can anybody now confirm whether they have nv Firewall's IAM running? Goto bottom of page

I'm very sorry to double post on this forum, especially considering the sheer volume of A8N-SLI threads there are on this forum. But my previous thread seems to have reached a dead end.

I wrote a couple of days ago regard a problem I'm having with installing nv firewall on XP SP2. I won't reiterate here, but I believe the problem could be solved or further diagnosed if some kind soul with a working installation of the nv firewall could help me out.

Basically, I need four files:
FW_WATCH.EXE
APP_POPUP.EXE
APPFLTUI.DLL
NTRAYFW.EXE

Please could somebody search around the installation directory of there working nv firewall installation (default is: C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NetworkAccessManager) and either post a link to this files or email them to me at: mail@mymindset.co.uk

I will then investigate the problem, and if this solves it, I'll resolve the issue on here, nVidia's forum and I'll close off my enquiries with ASUS tech support. Full credit will, of course, be given to anyone who helps me with this.

Many, many thanks in advance to anybody who can spare the time and effort to help with this.

Cheers,
Louis.

You need to completely disable the SP2 windoze built in firewall before installing the nv active armour/firewall. If the nv sw was botched on install, try uninstalling it and reinstalling it----after you completely disable the SP2 firewall.

I sent you an email. I had to rename them to .txt because gmail is picky about attachments. You just have to rename them back to their original extensions.

xtknight - Thank you a hundred times from myself and the nVidia forum users. We have been unable to locate this files from many sources (including ASUS). This will provide a quick-fix for us.

joelslaw - Yes, those files are included in that chipset driver. Unfortunately, they're bundled into the NetworkAccessManagerSetup.exe, and I know of no way to extract the files from that exe.

FastEddie - Yes, this may be the problem. How do you completely disable the firewall? So far, I have opened control panel, selected Windows Firewall and clicked off and ok. I've also been to control panel, selected network connections, right-clicked each connection, selected properties and clicked advance, to ensure that none of them have conflicting firewall settings. Is there anything further I need to do.

I have to leave for work now, but I will investigate the files xtknight sent on my return this evening. Thanks once again. You're a star.

Cheers,
Louis.

I am not at my system now louiserose, but I think if you go into network connections, right click on the active LAN port, and go into advanced settings you can disable the firewall protection.

The quick-fix approach works. Turning off the firewall centrally nor locally nor both does not eliviate the installation problem.

I will post the files for general consumption later this evening.

I was thinking this fix would enable nv firewall's IAM. (That little popup app that appears when an application is trying to access the network, but access has been denied). However, this is not the case. Has anybody got IAM working at all?

louisrose--did you by chance also install the Norton Internet Firewall suite that came bundled with the board? I ask as it sounds like you've got a battle going on regarding which app is to perform the firewall duties. Norton is known for renaming extensions.

FastEddie - No I refrained from installing that as I run my own anti-virus software, AVG. It does not include a firewall.

I have now posted the files for everyone to use: Download here

Unzip them to your <<install location>>\bin, typically: C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NetworkAccessManager\bin

So, has anyone got IAM working?

Hmm..what is IAM? Internet Access Manager? Well I think so, I have the Firewall set on medium, and I can use the Web-based interface to administer it. ActiveArmor is enabled and the rest of it is enabled to some extent (medium option). If you need any more files just let me know, I'd be happy to send them.

IAM - Intelligent Application Manager.

For more information, see this document from nVidia's website. Adobe Acrobat is required to view this link.

I have the firewall set to medium and use the web-based interface to administer it too. ActiveArmour is also enabled for me too.

I expected to see a little popup alerting me when the firewall was blocking an application from opening a network connection. An example of what I mean is depicted on page 8 of the above link. I'm surprised that I'm not seeing this.

With the firewall on the default settings for medium, Windows's default ftp and telnet clients are blocked. Try clicking Start, clicking Run, typing cmd and then issuing a command such as "ftp ftp.microsoft.com."

I expect the firewall will block this. (To check, open the web interface, expand firewall and goto Logs). However, the only notification I receive is through checking the logs. I was expecting IAM to pop up.

I had the same problem. It also blocks Windows Update and my Virus/Adblocker Update programs.

I tried to turn them on manually without success. I just turned it off at the moment and the Windoze one back on :( Might have to go back to a software solution...

The problem is this only works for outgoing server applications, as far as I know (that's the only feasible reason why it would not show otherwise). It would be get pretty intermittent and annoying like ZoneAlarm if it had to tell you every time you ran a net application anyway... (though I would like that, most casual users wouldn't. I'm a "control freak" :)). Since I run a lot of games that create their own "127.0.0.1" servers, it still shows and thus I still get a warning. As far as I can tell, it's working as advertised (surprise!, unlike PureVideo :|).

Oh, and with the ftp thing, I do not have this problem. It shows the login for me with Firewall at medium.

C:\Documents and Settings\unknown>ftp ftp.microsoft.com
Connected to ftp.microsoft.com.
220 Microsoft FTP Service
User (ftp.microsoft.com: (none)): ^C
C:\Documents and Settings\unknown>

I am not even set as DMZ on my router, and it still works just fine. I'm not sure what's wrong with your guys' firewall settings :(. Try opening your favorite game (I'm sure you guys play games) and click create server. nVidia firewall should either interrupt the game or sort of come up behind the game somehow, or you should at least see it once you close the game and click Unblock to host the server.

louisrose: You can open the NetworkAccessManager.exe setup by using WinRAR, but I already looked and those files are absent from that archive. I'm not sure where they are...

i just wanted to tell louisrose:

I downloaded that chipset driver pack (both parts), found "NetworkAccessManagerSetup.exe" (it's in both parts) and was able to open it fine in WinRAR (winzip wouldn't do it) However I didn't see any of those files you mentioned, and none of the files in "NetworkAccessManagerSetup.exe" seem to be compressed. Anyway, I just thought I'd let you know about WinRAR, hopefully it'll can save you some time and frustration in the future! :)

Edit: ooops! sorry, I just read xknight's post above. that'll teach me to post w/o reading first

Again, thanks for all of your responses guys. Sorry for the lateness of my reply.

Thorsson - IAM should alert you to these blocks, but, as the vein of this thread is now showing, I am unable to enable it. I'm hoping that by asking the ever-helpful xtknight a few more questions I can resolve this.

In the meantime, you can go to http://localhost:3476/cgi-bin/ncgir.exe?menu/index.html (the firewall web-based interface) and expand firewall and expand logs.

Now run the app that is having problems access the network. Click "Refresh Now" in the firewall web-based interface window and grab the name of the app that's blocked.

You can then allow this app by changing the firewall's settings. If you are unsure as to how to do this, let me know and I'll give you some more details.

joelslaw / xtknight - Thanks for the information about WinRAR. That could come in handy in the future.

I have taken a screenshot of a message I received from the nVidia firewall's IAM and apparently it is working for normal outgoing client applications(?). This is after I pressed "advanced...", "more options...", or something like that on the dialog that came up.
xtknight - Great. This is exactly what I would like to see happen on my machine. I have fired up Windows Media Player (I have v10) and clicked Guide. Sure enough, the firewall blocked the application (I get a 404 in Media Player and my firewall logs indicate that they blocked the wmplayer exe). However, IAM did not popup to alert me that it was blocking the application.

What version of Windows are you running, and with what SPs? Can you give me a list of the processes running on your machine? I can then try to see if there's a daemon for IAM that you have running that I don't.

To send me a list of your running processes, you could bring up the task manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL or right-click on the taskbar and select Task Manager). Click the processes tab and then expand the window so the scrollbar has disappeared. Then post a screenshot.

Or use this app from the command prompt and paste the text.

Cheers,
Louis.

Sorry, I haven't been checking this forum for a few days...

Well you know what, I've gotten 404s before too. If I disabled the firewall then re-enabled it and then rebooted everything seemed to be fine. Otherwise, you should try reinstalling the firewall. I'll try to find the setup program for you. Just one question: what happened to your original motherboard/nForce drivers CD or do you still have it? The best thing to do at this point is to completely uninstall it and reinstall it from your CD. I sent you the setup program... it won't clog your inbox because it's a link to the file hosted on the YouHostIt.com service which is a good free hosting site. Enjoy. If you could post that link in this forum for everyone to use that would be great (only you have the link), assuming the link doesn't expire (it might), because it's just an e-mail attachment service.

I'm not a fan of their (NVIDIA's) clumsy web administration device, especially because you have to run it inside Internet Explorer, which is probably loaded with pop-up blocking crap that may inhibit the use of some of the admin features. It just feels hard to use compared to a decent and solid Windows UI program. Not to mention the fact that it has to install the Apache web server on your computer.

Related daemons running are:

C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NetworkAccessManager\Apache Group\Apache2\bin\apache.exe
C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NetworkAccessManager\bin\nSvcIp.exe
C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NetworkAccessManager\Apache Group\Apache2\bin\apache.exe
C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NetworkAccessManager\bin\nSvcLog.exe
C:\Program Files\NVIDIA Corporation\NetworkAccessManager\bin\nSvcAppFlt.exe

Good luck. Here is my system info:

Windows XP Professional, SP2
Windows Firewall completely disabled, nForce firewall used instead.

P.S. HijackThis (freeware, yes, it's called that) is a good application for viewing processes, under the miscellaneous tools section (Generate StartupList Log). It shows the path of the processes as well.

xtnight,

Thanks once again. I have all of the daemon process you list running.

I have installed and reinstalled from my mobo CD numerous times.

I have suspicions that nv Firewall works if you install it for the first time, before you install SP2. Installing for the first time after installing SP2 causes issues. I could verify this but it would mean formatting my hard-disc; something which I'm not prepared to do until ASUS conclude its inquiries. I think they'll kick it to nVidia.

Thanks for your help and the setup file, but it doesn't resolve my problem. Unfortunately the link on YouSendIt expired after I downloaded the file. If anybody needs the file in the future, you can download it from ASUS, or contact me and I'll be glad to forward it on.

Cheers,
Louis.

Well, I installed nvFirewall after I installed SP2 and am having no issues whatsoever (well I shouldn't say that). One issue is that I put myself on DMZ and for the first connection nvFirewall allows through, but any other connections and it's like I'm not on DMZ (demilitarized zone for servers) anymore. But I can at least use all the functions without errors, I think that's just a bug. Make sure you don't have Windows Firewall or any other firewall running... One last thing you should try is to uninstall the network adapter drivers themselves, uninstall everything nVidia from your system and try reinstalling it all (easier said than done, I know how that is). Hey, it may be easier than reinstalling Windows and all of your other apps.

Hi!

One possible solution for popups: You need to use regsvr32 to register the new dll (AppFltUi.dll) correctly - or you don't get the application network access popups. So, in your <<install location>>\bin directory You should do this: regsvr32 AppFltUi.dll. That's all.

Wow. How did you figure that out? Maybe there's a bug in the installation that doesn't register all libraries. Good job. The question remains why mine works with the install and his doesn't though...

I must have the most strange update to this thread, as ive been working nonstop with my firewall problem, having most of the same symptons as the rest of youguys, i had a strange coincident.
As ive been updating the firmware on my dvd-r i thought it was about time to install the analog line to my motherboard to be able to listen to cd, etc.
But the first time i rebooted after doing this my firewall chrashed bigtime, not working at all, and windows frooze after rebboting for about 10-15 sec. before even finding the lan-connections. I was dumbfounded....
When i fell asleep tonight i suddenly remembered plugging this cord in, and thought that might be te problem, and right i was, the first thing i did today was to unplug ths cord, and suddenly everything works like a dream...
Anyone experiencing the same prob., please try this solution.
Regards..
F

Update: This problem acctually seems to be psu related, as my 360 watt ATX 2.0 powersupply doesn't seem to supply enough wattage to my system, even tho im only using 1 6600 GT and only one disk, and one cd-drive..... When i unplug my cd-drive i experience no probs what so ever, but if its in my system becomes unstable...
