Asus a8n sli compatibility issues

I recently have been having a major problem with my new PC. I started a thread here:

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...atid=27&threadid=1604928&enterthread=y

Basically, I was having problems with my pc going extremely slow and freezing. This would happen many times a day. I ran memtest and after the first pass got over 200 errors. I then tried running memtest on a different system using the same ram and got no errors. I then used diff ram on the new system ran memtest and got no problems again.

I am completely confused. On my older system (which I am using now) its an Asus a7v266-e. I originally bought crucial RAM for it, but for some reason, I could not set the cpu to its max speed, so I RMA'ed the RAM and got some samsung.

Does anyone have any advice for me? I dont know what my next step should be and really need some help. If this is confusing to anyone please ask and I will try to clarify. Thanks alot.

I also checked Asus and crucial, and both websites say they support each other. One must have a slight defect. What would it be best todo?

Sorry man, I dunno. From what you've said, I'm not sure how you could tell if it's the RAM or MoBo. If I had to take a guess, I'd guess it's the RAM. Have you tried it in the A8N-SLI again? Maybe it was just seated badly or something...

I think you should contact Asus tech support and see what they say. They might have some clue what is going on.

You might also see if you can return the RAM you have to where you bought it and exchange for a different brand. If you bought it at Newegg, call them and tell them your problem. Newegg is really good at helping out there customers.

I called Asus and they said to call Crucial to see if my timings were right. So I called crucial and they gave me timings (2, 2, 2, 6). Still errors in memtest. So I called back and the guy told me to make sure my BIOS is up to date.

I tried to figure what my BIOS version is and how to update. I had version 1001, the latest is 1008 (i think), but I could only download 1006 from the site. So I updated through Asus Update.

I found this site http://www.hardwareanalysis.com/content/topic/38623/ and used the BIOS settings it had, although its for deluxe edition, and mine is not deluxe.

Ran memtest again and....omg no errors....at least not until the 4th pass. It has currently been running for 3.5 hours, and has had only 3 errors. Compared to one pass and over 200 errors, I think this is an improvement.

However, I read that 1 error is 1 error too many. So what do you make of this? What should my next move be? Is this unacceptable? I need some feedback.

Thanks.

Try the sticks 1 at a time and runt Memtest overnight if possible. You might have one stick that is bad.
In theory you should get zero erors, but if your system runs stable, then personally I would leave well enough alone.

This is some good news at least. 🙂

I haven't had the chance to test each stick individually yet, but the pc seems to be running very slowly. Are there any programs or tools I can use to see if my pc is running as it should, or that would aid me in troubleshooting my problem?

in my case.. there is more probability of having bad rams rather than the mobo.. try to borrow a ram from a friend or something and test it again..

I was able to update BIOS to 1008, and am currently testing each stick individually with memtest86. I notice two websites. www.memtest86.com and memtest.org. Are they the same? I am using the one from the first website.

Will update once each stick is tested.

I am using a boot CD.

I have been reading, and I'm concerned about RAM settings in BIOS and wondering if these might be causing me problems. I am using crucial ballistix pc3200 512mb sticks. I have it set at 2-2-2-6, from what I found on crucial website and what tech support told me (although they don't seem very helpful.) The mhz, as it shows while running memtest86+ is 200, it also says ddr402.

Do these settings seem right? Would they have anything to do with the problems I am having? I am currently testing 1 stick, do i need to change settings for 2 sticks? If I do find errors using this test does that mean 100% that there is something wrong with the module?

Thanks for the help.

My Corsair Value RAM is also reported at DDR402. It is because my HTT is at 201mhz. I could never figure out why it is like this but a lot of people have said it is normal.

Ok, tested one stick for just over 15 hours and no errors!! This is a good sign. I'll test the other stick today.

Is RAM normally supposed to be really hot to the touch, when its in a running system? It almost burnt my finger. If not, what does it mean?

Ok more questions, had been running memtest86+ on the second module for 2.5 hours and when I checked, it had 12 errors, and it was all the same error. Hit esc to start test again, and in test number 4 of first test another error popped up.

Does this mean 100% that this module is bad? If I test the first one again, which had no errors in 15 hours, about 65 passes, is there a possibility of an error coming up, was it just a good test for the first module?

Need help please.

I'm thinking that the answer is yes.

I was wondering....

The a8n-sli manual shows which dimm slot to put the RAM depending on how many you have. I have read that dimm slots can be faulty too. Should I test the RAM in each slot even tho, the a8n specifies RAM to be put in one slot if you have 1 stick?
