Greetings,

A few days ago my chipset fan failed on my motherboard (see sig). My computer manufacturer sent me a new replacement one, with no problems what-so-ever, however I am having a heck of a time removing the old one from my motherboard. One of the pins came out but the other is still stuck in there. I have heard some horror stories about people having to remove their whole motherboard to replace this fan.... my question: Is there any way to easily remove this fan with damaging anything or removing my motherboard? Great thanks to anyone who can help!!!!

Hi,

There is a way but you will have to destroy the pins.
Clip them out. Really cut them.

Wow... Clip them, you say? What would you recommend to use to clip these things? Will sharp wire cutter do the trick? Thanks for the help!

I used a needle nose plier to pinch the two clips inwards and that was it. It was quite simple. Just don't gouge any traces.

Oh, btw, this message assumes you are going to remove your motherboard, otherwise it won't work obviously.

Of course, I am not going to be removing my motherboard. No way!!!!!!!!! If I were, I would definately use those needle-nose pliers. Due to the time and work involved, I would rather cut those pegs off and remove it that way than go through the whole mess of removing my motherboard. I appreciate all of the help though:) Will standard wire cutters cut through those pegs, you all think? They are about 3mm thick, so my sharp wire-cutters should do the trick... I guess I will find out when I get home:)

I guess I'll ask this here also, as I just got my replacement fan. Is this how the step-by-step goes?

1. Remove old fan in whatever way suits you (without damaging the motherboard).
2. Any cleaning involved here?
3. Remove thermal pad cover thing (the plastic piece with a tab on it)
4. Clip the new fan back onto the board.

I know it seems kinda stupid, but I don't want to screw it up. I'm not sure how thermal pads and stuff work, so I don't know if you need a clean surface or need to install it in any certain way so that it works properly.

Thanks,
Aip

These seem to be the basic steps involved in this whole process. Just be very careful! i tried to remove the old fan by clipping off the tabs with wire cutters, but still couldn't get that last little peice out after all of this work! Rather than spend an entire night removing my motherboard and go that route, I am arranging for my PC manufacturer to come do all of this for me. It's in their hands now! I guess if I paid the extra $100 for a warranty, I might as well use it! Plus, this will let me do other things with my night, rather than futz around with my PC and get bigger headaches. I just hope I didn't screw up my motherboard in the mean-time!!!!!! Wish me luck, all:)

PS. I was told alcohol works fine for cleaning the old residue off of the chip!!!

Hi guys, since everybody here has replaced the chipset cooler, could somebody please measure the distance between the holes on the original cooler?
It would be a great help.
I'm trying to watercool my tyan k8we, but only asus a8n and msi k8nneo4 waterblocks are available and nobody has been able to give me the measurement of the hole spacing. thanx.
