Hi,

I have an ASUS A8N-SLI mobo and as many others i had problems with the chipset fans that asus has mounted. So i replaced it with a passive cooler, bigger but at least it can't get broken!
Now I have bought a brand new Sapphire HD4870, which is a double slot video card and cannot be mounted with any chipset fan bigger that the original one. The solution is not good because the fan air flow is obstructed by the video card cooler, that is just in front of it. Anyway i put back the Asus original cooler, but it is broken and makes awful noise.
Now i have 2 options:
- contact ASUS support and ask for a replacement
- buy a new thin cooler with fan

I's rather choose the second options, cause i really fear all the painful process of contacting ASUS support. Can anyone suggest me a good replacement? I am no expert on this and i was not able to find a product that i feel sure about.

thanks

Ok. Under normal circumstances I would be suggesting the Swiftech MCX159-CU but in your case this won't work. Looking for a replacement for the original HSF is not advisable also. HSF like this are scarce to find and they won't last. What you need is one of these : http://www.thermalright.com/ne...ct_chipset_cooler.html

Both the HR-05 and the HR-05 SLI are verified to fit on your board. My take is that the IFX variations will also fit.

Hello, I have an almost equal configuration as you and
I'm having hard DirectX crashes, how stable is your sistem running
3dMark2006 for example?

I'm thinking about returning the HD4870, I'm confused.

Back on topic, I made a pasive low profile cooler for solving
the space issue. Y cut a big chunk of an old cpu cooler
and atached with glue directly over the chipset.

It's pretty hot, but I think is receiving decent airflow over it.

Thanks for your help!

Have a good day.

You could just replace the cooling solution on your 4870 and kill two birds with one stone. Something like this maybe?: Arctic Cooling Accelero Twin Turbo.

On Thursday I'm going to be putting once of these into my cousins PC, but before I do, I'm going to mount it into my brothers A8N-SLI Deluxe that I mounted a Swiftech copper fan cooler in a while back. If it fits, then I'll know w two slot modern video card will fit in it, properly cooled.

If you wait until this Thursday/Friday, I can give you the info on that.

You could try the Evercool VC-RE cooler it worked on the DFI NF4 Lanparty boards w/ similar Northbridge lay outs to your A8N-SLI, it was cheap and cools much better than the stock HSF

here's a link for one VC-RE @ newegg however its cheaper elseware due to shipping

If you have a Microcenter in your area they had close outs from Comp USA that included a VGA cooler w/ some ram sinks that was pretty much a clone of the VC-RE that might even be cheaper.

This is a good HSF but it won't fit. It will definitely interfere with nearby components. There's just not enough space for it.

Hi guys,

i asked for replacement to ASUS and they are sending. I know it's not permanent solution, but my config won't last that long... (thinking about a ASUS P5Q and a COreDuo).
thanks!
