Hello, I've been working on my new upgraded computer for three weeks now, and it still doesn't work. Up until three days ago my only problem was whenever I tried to use a cd-rom a stop error would happen, of the machine_check_exception variety. Now however, I can't get the system to boot at all. In normal windows boot, it hangs as the XP splash screen initially comes up. In safe mode, it hangs on mup.sys. I've tried booting from both hard drvies, and several reinstalls of windows. Any help would be appreciated.

My Specs:
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (939)
Corsair ValueSelect PC-3200 512mb ram
Geforce 6600GT
Maxtor 40GB IDE
Maxtor 160GB IDE
Athena 500W Power SupplyPSU

Hi ZD & welcome to the forums, hopefully I can get discussion started on your issue(s).

If you can, try to write down the machine exception error you are getting (code should look like 0x000000e, etc.). Sometimes Googling the code or entering it in MS Knowledge Database will help you figure out what's happening. It has helped me before, believe it or not.

Insofar as the mup.sys stall goes, it seems that it is related to a PCI device error or conflict. Try booting without any of your PCI cards in to see if that changes anything. Check back here and we can probably work through whatever issue you're having, with the help of other members.

That's a nice setup, let's get some games running on that puppy! :) Good luck, tty soon.

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

MACHINE_CHECK.EXCEPTION

If this is the first time you?ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced start up options, and then select safe mode.

Technical information:

***STOP: 0X0000009C (0X00000004, 0X00000000, 0XB2000000, 0X00070F0F)
According to Microsoft, the problem could be one of four things. A stressed power supply (I believe I have stopped that, this is my third power supply I've tried), a processor error, which is possible since I don't have an alternate machine to test the cpu in, faulty memory, which according to memtest, is fine, or overheating, also possible, but sometimes it happens right after I boot up, and sometimes it doesn't happen for awhile.
As for booting without PCI devices, I don't have any installed except for my pci express video card

Replaced the DVD-Rom with a regular CD-RW and have had no problems. So apparently the board didn't like that drive. Thanks for the help...
