ok the basic situation is this:
i play World of Warcraft. in thier latest maintainance "patch" (i use the term very losely) they did something that monkeyed around with system memory. prior to this patch the game ran perfectly, now i can't run the game with both my sticks of pc2700 DDR ram. if i do the game crashes within minutes. the only way to get it to run is to use ONE of the sticks at a time. either stick works fine, but ONLY by itself.
a few details here. i have 2x512 MB chips. they are different manufacturers, samsung and crucial but are the same speed. i ran about 12 hours of memory tests using the test from memtest.com. no errors. several people on the tech support forums (of the game) are complaining abiyt similar issues. apparently the game tries to reference invalid or out of range memory. as far as i know it is limited to people with more than one stick of DDR memory that use "dual channel" memory.
my chips are 2 sided, but i dont really understand much about dual channel memory. someone suggested that i disable dual channel until they fix this bug, but i dont know how to do that or what it would do to my system. also someone suggested that putting the ram chips in certain slots would help. for example, my board has 3 slots, i simply stuck my ram chips in slots 2 and 3 to keep them away from the CPU.
what im hoping is that someone can give me a brief explanation of what dual channel really is. also does it matter what slots i put my chips in? to date i haven't had a problem with this. can i really disable dual channel for the time being? what will it do?
thanks for any info.
