 I'm a novice and I'm buying an ASUS A7V266-E but I'm uncertain about the different memory it takes. I see stuff for unbuffered, registered, and ECC but I hear different things. I will use my computer to do statistical simulations in addition to gaming. Is there any reason to prefer one type to another. Several people have told me that ECC really offers no advantage, while others say it's not true. Someone told me the board only accepts registered and someone else told me the opposite. Any help would be apreciated.

Unbuffered/unregistered is all you need. If there are 4 dimm slots, some boards require registered memory (shuttle doesn't though). ECC does slow things down... though it's pretty much negligible.

Depending on the motherboard, if you used all of the DIMM slots, some M/B would require registered memory, especially if you were using the 512 MB memory modules. If you use ECC DIMMS you will take a slight performance hit 2-3%. This is neglegable unless you are OC'ing your system. High end systems, especially servers usually require registered memory with ECC. I use registered memory with ECC on my new system MSI K7T266 Pro2 RU motherboard and have noticed the memory scores are kind low compare to other people are reporting. My system is very stable and have not have any problems.
