I was wondering if someone could clue me in to how much of a performance hit I will take if I use a XP 1800+ with an old Asus board (I can;t afford a new one). I was wondering if people thought it would be worth upgrading the processor (Thunderbird 800) and not the motherboard or if I should just save my pennies.

well as long as you are using pc133 ram it wont be much of a difference
id say save your pennies, and wait for a total upgrade of mobo/cpu/ram

IIRC from the original reviews between KT133A and KT266A mobos, there was ~5%-15% performance increase from SDR and DDR based solutions. This may have increased now that apps are more bandwidth intensive. I think the KT266A boards also had a slight performance gain from SSE2 which first arrived on the Palominos, but not 100% sure. KT133A is still a very capable chipset, so you would see a significant increase in performance by upgrading to a CPU that is 2x+ faster in clock speed.
