Everything was fine with my computer untill one day I turned on the power and got this terrible hissing/whining noise. Turns out it's my NorthBridge fan. Nothing I do makes it stop. I've tried cleaning it and remounting it. The fan makes really loud noises for a little bit then goes back down to a normal whine. Like if it was unbalanced or something...

It's driving me crazy! Anyone elese had this problem??

Could be a bad fan header on the mobo.

I had this problem. Two things seemed to help. The first is not very scientific, I jostled the fan a bit. Noise stopped.

When it came back I moved the fan wires to the CPU fan header (my CPU fan is connected directly to the PSU via a 4-pin molex). This seems to have solved my problem permanently.

If you don't have an available fan header you could get a 3pin to 4pin adapter. Only thing is the RPM monitoring won't be available.

Those fans are very low quality & they tend to dry up.

Remove it & peel the sticker under the fan,now add 1 drop of oil & it will be fine for 1000miles more.;)

I had the same problem so I unscrewed the 4 screws and took the fan off , turned it upside down , and shot some WD 40 all around the sleave bearing. This fan looks like it uses a sleave type of bearing instead of a ball type. So far the WD 40 has taken care of the whining noise I was having. All is quiet for now.

wow--my girlfriend's fan does the same annoying thing!! It only happens (but religiously happens) during boot up...once the splash screen shows, no more crazy sound.

So it'll just be annoying right? If I don't lube that baby up, it won't blow up, will it?

There have been threads here about the ABIT KT7 chipset fans going bad. Mine was getting noisy, so I emailed ABIT and had a new fan in my mail box in less than two weeks. ABIT tech support claims the chipset will fry without the fan, your mileage may vary, but why take the chance? Maybe ASUS will send you a replacement fan like ABIT did.
