Asus A7V vs. MSI K7T Pro2 question

Squisher

Lifer
Would a KT7 Pro2 with an add-on Promise Card access an ATA100 Hard drive as fast as the A7V with its on board Promise card? Because, it would seem to me the MSI would be ham strung by its 686A chipset.

Ham strung 686A? Do you realize how insignificant ATA66 and ATA100 makes? MSI plan to use the 686B for K7T Pro2 later on. And yes a Promise card will be just as fast as a Promise controller.

ata 100 is not only isignificant but the controler is problematic(when ata 100 is enabled)( ata 66 with an ata 100 controler is fine)

MSI is going to release the Pro2-100, which will use the 686B south bridge, in dec I believe. You can wait if you want.

and for your question, I think it's just as fast.

sigh, my 2000th posts!! woo... woo... I can't see me being Platinum Member...

the only difference between ATA66 and ATA100 is that the burst speed can be up close to 80mb/sec(correct me if i'm wrong) but personally i don't think it's worth the price premium

Squisher:

Thats only burst speed, which is what your hard drive can reach in less than 1% of the time. For get about those.

Absolutely, even if you have to have ATA100, you can just buy a controller card. The K7T Pro2 saves you about $20 over the KT7, so you can spend those money on a controller card if you need to.
