Asus A7V error:

I'm not sure if this is a soundcard problem or a motherboard problem? Sorry if I posted this in the wrong forum.

I am experiencing the following problems: First, whenever I would boot up Windows '98 on the ATA/100 controller, the computer would restart repeatedly. Second, if I boot up Windows '98 on the ATA/66 controller, I would get a Windows protection error and would say that I have my stacks set too high in my "config.sys" file. I would get the same errors with Windows Me (stacks set too high) on the ATA/66 and ATA/100 controllers. This seems to happen only after I install my Soundblaster Live! drivers. You think you could help me out, ... anyone? Here is my hardware config (if needed):

ASUS A7V revision 1.01 (BIOS 1004c)
Voodoo3 3000
Soundblaster Live! Platinum
Generic Diamond 56k Modem
Adaptec 2930 SCSI-2 connected to a Plextor burner and Toshiba DVD
WD 20.5 GB HDD
OS: Windows 98, 2000, Me

Is there anything else that might help? HELP?!?! Thanks.

Try flashing your BIOS.

There is a newer BIOS avaliable at ASUS' website(1005). I have read that the version 1004 is buggy. Version 1003 is suppose to be better than 1004, too.

Do you mean "REM Stacks=(blank)"? Don't I need a number in my stacks? Do I need the "REM" command? Isn't "REM" used for remarks? And, on Asus' website, there is no 1005 revision yet. They only have 1004. Does that mean that the 1005 revision is a beta still? Does the SBLive! Platinum 5.1 even work well with Windows Me/98 or 2000? Anyways, enough babbling, I'll try it out.

The REM command tells the computer to ignore that line. So what you have there is not really relavant. You really should not even have anything in the config.sys. Note: If you know exactly what the line does and the reason for it, keep it.
Alternatively, if you go to the boot menu, and choose the selective (I think that is what it is called but my mind just is not working this afternoon) and choose not to run the config.sys and the autoexec.bat and see what happens.

Okay, adjusting my settings in config.sys did not benefit me in anyway what-so-ever. What did help me out was disabling my serial ports. That freed up two IRQs. And also, I did update my BIOS. Everything's running fine for now, let's just see what happens in the next few days. Thanks for all the help guys.

By the way, does anyone know why Windows 2000 does not recognize my HDD when I connect it to the ATA/100 controller?

Go here for bios 1005a. I flashed last weekend with 1005a and have no problems. Windows boots much faster for me.

Do you have the promise drivers installed in win 2000? If not that is your problem. They will show up under SCSI in device manager if they are installed correctly.
