Does anyone know where I can buy on-line the Asus Audio Modem Riser (MR-1) and the Asus Infrared Module Connector (5-PIN)?

The motherboard manual describes both items as an affordable way to use the existing motherboard capabilities (build-in modem, infrared codecs) but they are very hard to find a supplier, even in the internet.

My motherboard supplier told me that these are low cost items, can be ordered only in large quantities from ASUS, and that due to low demand from end users there aren't out there in retail(?). He directed me to the ASUS site.

The site recommends two companies - computershop.com, pricekiller.com - but they don't carry them in their sites. I e-mailed to both companies and to ASUS but I had no replies yet.

I would appreciate your help or any info you may have on the subject.

Seeing the prices of modems and network cards, why not just get one of the standard PCI ones? Either way its going to eat up a PCI slot, and this way you can be ensured of better compatability in the future. Besides, is it really worth the hassle of finding one of those things?

What is the infrared module used for anyways? Is it the same one that connects to printers and such?

Oh and also, the AMR modem uses up the processor power, for this reason alone, you should get the $20 Motorola PCI modem instead (I have it and it works fine). As for the infrared, I don't have any idea.

Thanks for your replies/comments.

paulip: you have a fair point to go with a PCI modem, considering the low cost ($20). However, I have paid for the integrated modem and the infrared module (included in the mobo price, there is no way to say I don't want to pay for these integrated features). It would be good deal to find them now that the mobo is still in the market(they told me that they cost around $5 and $40 respectively). On the other hand, I always had problems with internal modem cards. If I go with a modem I would choose external USB which costs more than $20.

Stytis: I will use the infrared module (IrDA) to transmit data, wireless, between the PC and my laptop (I use it at work), Palm IIIx, and Nokia cell phone. Sometimes, speeds can get up to 4Mbps! It is very convenient (no cables) and fast way to transfer data and to synchronize calendars, address books that you share in your machines.

Bandit7: thanks, interesting site, I had already bookmarked it. Though, the IrDA module from ASUS attaches to the front panel of the case, internally. There are no wires coming from the back of the case. This is something I didn't see in the ACTIsys site.

I have seen one AMR modem in one of my catalogues but was turned off due to the cost. They still wanted $15 and when you tack on the shipping and handling it came out a buck or two cheaper than I could get a good PCI modem at the local computer shop.
Of the infared I can not say.

Hi the second time from germany.
The irda i have is a Actisys:ACT-IR210L. It is hooked to the MOBO,and has a connector that can be screwed to a slotblend or to an extra opening like a shut seriel extend on the back of your case. Fron there you hook up your IRDA EYE which has a cable that is about 1-1/5 meters long and you can place the IRDA EYE where ever you want on your desk. I think this solution is better, then holding my Mobil phone with my legs sitting in front of my PC ( with the IRDA EYE built in a 5 1/4 slot ) and trying to get my phonenr. and every thing else in order.
This way I have a chance on pointing the IRDA EYE to the Printer and can still use it. GET IT???
Hope I could get the solution over better this time. C/U

Bandit7: How did you managed to make win98SE recognize your act-210l?
It work for me fine on 95, but I can't make it on 98SE.
