I've just put together the new asus a7n8x board with the amd xp 2800+ cpu. Its running with a 512mb chip of pc3200 corsair ddr. I am using Artic silver 3 with a volcano 9 fan. When I first booted the machine, it detected the proc at 1350mhz. I went in, and changed the external freq to 166mhz, put the multiple setting on menu, and selected 13.5...which should be fine for the 2800. those were the only settings I changed. I saved, and exited... it didnt reboot. powered down, waited 5 seconds, powered up.. came up, 1350mhz, and at the bottom said "cpu have over speed" (not even correct english) ... went into the bios, the settings were set to 166mhz, 13.5x... so I put the multiplier setting back on auto, left the freq speed at 166mhz. rebooted... came up.. went to hardware monitor, BAm cpu temp rising by the second.. got to 80 I pulled the plug. pulled out the bios battery, replaced, booted and was back at square one.. thought I smoked the cpu.. was close. when its running at 1350mhz with default bios settings, the cpu runs at 60C...which still seems somewhat high.. The jumper is set on the board for 333mhz bus..

Can someone tell me the exact settings of everything I need to change in the bios? explain why the cpu might be running so hot? I'm sitting here with an expensive paper wait... I was super excited, help please!!

bios settings are correct

if you used a shim, take it out
if you didnt, remount heatsink (notched side on heatsink with raised side on socket)

either way remount heatsink, maybe its not making proper contact

tweber, that's a pretty new combo you have there, 2800+ N Board, and answers might be hard to find right now.

I remounted.. same..

I have a feeling its because its not set up for the right cpu...I dont get it.

The amd proc also has 4 round pads on the corners.. I am supposed to leave those on right? doesnt look like they come off...

update...

Apprantely the ram ps PC3000, 370mhz. I must have clicked the wrong one when ordering? CMX512-3000C2 370 MHz 512 MB 64M x 64 184 DIMM 2-3-3-6-T1 DDR 32M x 8 | http://www.corsairmemory.com/main/products/specs/CMX512-3000C2.pdf

Playing with values... I set this

cpu freq 166mhz
cpu freq set to auto, which is 12.5/13

ram freq by spd
166mhz

and 7, 3, 3, 2T

and it showed the xp 2800 on boot, no errors, however it was running at 78C.. way to damn hot... are those the correct settings for the 1 512mb chip + cpu? Does the volcano 9 just suck that much ass?

Where did you get a 2800+ cpu? From what I heard, the 2800+ wasn't going to be available until March or later next year??

First, have you physically touched the heatsink to verify the extreme temps you're getting? If its just slightly warm you're most likely safe. If it's really warm or hot, then you have a problem.

Just so you know, I just installed this MB yesterday with a 2400+, and used the stock heat sink and fan that comes with the retail chips. The CPU temp in the BIOS shows it hanging around 51-55 degrees Celcious. Frankly, I thought that was high, but if I remember correctly all boards with the C.O.P feature take the temps through one of the pins on the chip. From what I remember, everyone sees higher temps than you would get with a probe underneath the chip like most previous boards have.

If I were you, I would just use the board and stress test it even though your BIOS is giving you such hi temps. You've already re-seated the heatsink and are getting the same results, so it sounds like the temperature monitor is off for some reason. Also, since you used the utility in XP and it shows a much better temp, there must be a bug somewher. It could be a BIOS update issue. I can't remember what BIOS I was using. I think there's a new one out, 1001.C or something.

If you're able to install XP and everything is smooth, I'm sure the BIOS temp is off then.

I've stress tested it, and worked flawlessly... kept the cpu pegged at 100% for about 15 minutes, no problems. The Asus probe reported 47C, fan at 5000rpm... bios reported 86C. Im convinced the bios is wrong.

ok.. so i've set some cheezy settings.. and its running at 2800
Cpu external Freq: 166mhz
Cpu Freq multiple setting: auto
cpu frequency multiple: 12.5x/13x
systerm performace: aggressive
cpu interface: aggressive
memory freq: sync
resulting memory sync: 166mhz
memory timings: agressive
sdram active precharge delay: 7
sdram ras too cas delay: 3
sdram ras to precharge delay: 3
sdram cas latency: 2T
FSB Spread spectrum: disabled
cpu vcore auto: 1.65v
ddr voltage: 2.6v

These are obviously not the right settings...(for ram anyway) The bios reports 85+C for temp, and asus pc probe says about 47C at 100% cpu for about 15mins..

I am convinced the bios is reporting bad cpu temp values.

So... now.. to finalize the bios settings for the cpu ram.

CPU is 2800, 333mhz bus..
Ram is 1 stick of 512mb Corsair PC3000 Cas 2 in slot 1.

What should the best settings be? (for everything I listed above)

hey i just wanted to let you know that asus evidentally messed up a setting in the current bios that the a7n8x ships with, and, oddly enough, it is the temperature display through the bios. the new bios update is said to fix this, upon release. just thought i'd let you know. i got the a7n8x deluxe about a week ago and i love it to death other than that minor, yet panic-provoking, glitch. hope this helped. nice setup you got there!
