Welcome aboard Erich,

Your answer depends on the version number of your board and the BIOS. The BIOS is upgradeable, the board version is not. Check out the ASUS table at this site..

ASUS usually prints the board version on a small white label attached to the motherboard or a chip somewhere (don't confuse it with the same type of label on the BIOS). It may also be possible to find it in the System Summary of the Administrative Tools of Windows or in the ASUS PC Probe under System Information. Looks like what you want is 1.04 or newer.

Thank you. The bios revision on boot shows 1.001 but in Windows 1.019.
I don't know the motherboard revision, but from looking at the table seems I'd be safe up to a 2.2XP or
even a 2.4 if I got the right one.
I got the board in Feb 2003, I believe and it now has a 1.6 XP.

Thanks.

You are certainly safe up to the CPUs you mentioned. You can always flash the BIOS to the current version, just make sure you get the right files from the ASUS site. It is probably also dependent on the version of your motherboard.

BIOS 1007 is the current vesion for the A7N8X, and there are two 1007s. One is for boards revision 2.0 or later, one for 1.03, 1.04, 1.06.

ASUS describes the location of the PCB (motherboard) revision as follows:
The PCB (Printed Circuit Board) version is located beside the motherboard name printed on the motherboard. PCB 2.0 BIOS version or later are not compatible with PCB 1.06 or earlier BIOS versions.

The normally print the motherboard name between a couple of the PCI slots.
