Hi there,
I've exhausted ideas to get my new motherboard working, so decided I'd post here. Here's the situation...
I go to boot up the computer and it freezes during the "Verifying DMI Pool Data..." part, with the cursor just flashing. Now, I suspect the CPU may be bunk, as I'm guessing the next stage of startup involves more than simply the BIOS doing its thing. Another problem is that the CPU gets simply recognized as a 1350 MHz CPU (100*13.5), rather than a 2800+, 2.25 GHz CPU (166*13.5) during startup, even if I change the bus speed and/or multipliers to arbitrary values (within reason). I also did notice for a time that the CPU was at 95 degrees Celsius (according to the BIOS), which to me seems about 30-60 degrees too high. After I did notice that (unfortunately, not early on), I tried reapplying the heatsink (because it was obviously not making good contact), and the CPU temperature hovered around 32-35 degrees Celsius after that.
So I ask, is the CPU merely half-fried, yet working enough that the BIOS can at least see that there is a CPU? I suspect I fried the CPU, yet the C.O.P. (CPU Overheating Protection) in the ASUS board, should've just shut down the computer to protect the CPU, shouldn't it have? Lastly, if the CPU was simply semi-destroyed, would the system even POST at all?
Not sure if what I said made much sense, since I'm kinda peeved at the moment, but if anyone can tell me if they think my CPU is busted, or if they have a suggestion (other than flushing the BIOS, which I've tried), it would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
