Asus A7N8X keeps shutting off

I've just set up a new system:

Asus A7N8X Deluxe, dual LAN, 5.1 sound, SATA, firewire, no onboard video
Asus V8420 Deluxe GeForce 4 Ti 4200 128MB
Corsair PC-3200 XMS (1) 512MB
AMD XP 2600+
Thermalright SLK-800
Panaflo 80mm
Enlight 300W PSU plugged into APC 700vA UPS
<other stuff that doesn't matter, drives, etc>

It keeps wanting to shut off. It almost seems like a thermal protection kicking in, but it's stone cold. It does it when trying to load Linux or W2k, and even when in the bios.

I've double-checked the jumpers, and I *think* I have them set right.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hmmm, I fired it back up, went into the BIOS immediately, and the temp showed 102C. It took about 15 seconds to get to 105C, and then it shut off.

I immediately pulled the cpu out and it was just as cold as it could be.

What could be causing the mobo to misreport CPU temps that high, and what can I do to fix it?

Heatsink on backwards, perhaps. The base has a step cut into one end, which is there to clear the solid end of the CPU socket. I assume you used some high-quality thermal paste between the CPU core and the heatsink?

well it seems either the heatsink is making marginal contact because the temperature didnt shoot sky high and cpu didnt go up in smoke...

either heatsink is on wrong way, or the bios is reporting really weird temperatures causing the cpu thermal protection to shutdown the computer

can you try another cpu in the board, or try your cpu in a friends board?

Thanks for the suggestions. I double-checked my work, and although I had the cooler on the right direction, it had just the edge sitting up a bit, causing only a slight contact. I've moved the sink over and it works great now.

I did use Arctic Silver.

Thanks again to all for the suggestions. This machine really runs well.

yeah you have to be careful about that
you are lucky you had it making some contact atleast

that cpu will go up in smoke in less than 3seconds or so without proper contact
asus may have saved your cpu ;)

anyways nice to hear the problem was fixed :)

time to overclock :D

I'm going to be firing mine up Wednesday night, or perhaps Thursday night.

I've got a 2400+ that I plan to run at 12*166.

How do you like the onboard audio?

It quite possibly could be a Power Supply problem - you need to check the Max Output of you PS on the 3.3 and 5.o Volt Combined - it probably should be OVER 200Watts to keep up with all the Energy HOGS you've now got in your system.
I have an ANTEC 300 Watt which puts our 180W Combined to the 3.3 and 5.0 V. Rails - - - I just bought a Antec 350W SL which puts out a combo of 230W - and I will istall it before I go to one of the new N2 Mobos

Good Luck Michael
