Asus A7N8X-E strangeness

Here's my problem. Sometimes when I try to boot up, the system will power up and all the fans will be running, and the HDs will spin up, but it never goes through POST and the screen never comes on. If I turn it off for a bit, then turn it back on, sometimes it will start to work. It will say "System failed due to CPU overclocking." and make me go into the BIOS, but all I have to do is exit back out and it boots normally after that. I have no idea why it is behaving this way. Doesn't seem to be an overheating problem. Not sure what eles it could be. Anyone have any idea what might be going on here?

I have an Asus A7n8X Deluxe and have had the same problem but only after I have changed the multiplier setting in bios. Have you recently changed you settings to overclock?

That symptom (power-up, but no display on the first go-around) is sometimes a clue that your power supply is struggling. What brand and model is your power supply, and how old is it?

I haven't messed with the multiplier settings. Those are still being set automatically by the BIOS. I'm using a brand new Thermaltake Butterfly 480W p/s.

hmm.. ok, I installed Asus PCProbe so that I could monitor the temp of the cpu and the fan speed. It was working fine and recorded the info for me. Then I had a lockup (which I have found that I now get if I play games for more than about 20 minutes or so, which lead me to suspect overheating again). When I booted up, my cpu temp was 45C. It climbed up to about 50C during use. According to the PCProbe history, it got almost up to 60C while I was running the game (UT2K4). I wouldn't think that would be high enough to cause a lockup, but maybe it is. Now, after the second lockup, when I rebooted, I get an error when PCProbe starts or when I try to look at the history.

"Access violation at address 3247476F in module 'cp3240mt.dll'. Write of address 00C94000."

It pops up repeatedly when I try to look at the history and then the app crashes. If I delete the history file, then I just get the error when the app starts and it runs ok after that. When I tried recording the history again, I got the error once and then the Temperature Monitor and Fan Monitor buttons disappeared. Closed and restarted the appand started the history again and I got the error, but the buttons are still working. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app. That didn't help. The dll file in the error gets removed when I uninstall, but I still get the error after reinstalling. I have no idea what is going on here. My cpu temp is showing as 55C right now. The puter has been running for several hours, although I haven't done anything strenuous with it like gaming. Anyone got any more suggestions?

• What CPU are you using?
• What exact Corsair modules are you using?
• What memory voltage are you using?
• What speed is the memory being run at?

Ok, I'm using an Athlon 3200+ XP and one 512MB CMX512-3200C2PT DIMM (wanting to get another next month to run them together)
As for the other memory questions, where would I find that info? thx

Ok, I'd suggest moving the memory voltage to 2.7 volts instead of Auto, and see how that goes. Since your memory and CPU both share a native DDR400 or 200MHz bus speed, the motherboard should be getting them timed correctly as-is. If you still have 'strangeness' then holler
