Hi folks,

I am going to go for the Athlon XP1700+ CPU and would like to know which motherboard would be the best to use for overclocking this baby. I narrowed my search down to the following 2 motherboards. I just would like to know which one of the two performs better and why the ASUS motherboard is about $10 - $20 more than the ABIT. The only difference that I can find is that the ASUS motherboard has 2 LAN ports instead of just one (Which is nice because I was thinking of running a DHCP Server).

So please let me know which one I should get:

ASUS A7N8X Deluxe V2.0 or ABIT NF7-S V2.0 Motherboard

Thanks a lot in advance for all your feedback!

I hear the Abit board has more needed "features" to overclock the 1700+ to desired levels... the ASUS board has a few limitations... such as max cvore of 1.85v and perhaps max MultX of 12.5X for that CPU.

ask shim, he knows.

Both are nice boards. I personally have the Abit and it has been a fantastic board for me. It has a reputation as being a bit more overclockable. You can get more Vdd out of it, thus helping you get higher FSB speeds.

But there are plenty of people getting great results from the Asus, too.

the abit is a great board... i love mine...

the vdd is adjustable up to 1.7 volts and if you decide you want more, you can do a simple vdd mod with a pencil and a multimeter to get upwards to 2.0 volts or higher on your vdd...

i have been able to run my board at 230 mhz with crap bh-5 winbond :)

as long as my processor is stable... the board has been rock stable as well...

some issues to note:
1. vdimm overvolts by .1 volts
2. vcore undervolts by approximately .05 volts
3. temps read too high by about 8 to 10C but this issue has finally been addressed by the new 1.4 bios
4. SATA RAID corruption out the butt... but supposedly fixed with the new 1.4 bios as well (anyone wanna test out SATA RAID and tell us :))

yeah... i think that's it....

:) hope that helps

If all you want to overclock to is a 200Mhz FSB and don't really plan on going past that, which one would is better?

Not sure how much the Abit costs... but the Epox 8RDA+ is well under $100 and a very good overclocker.

I am a long time buyer of Asus boards, but I wouldn't spend the extra cash on the Asus nForce2 Deluxe board. I bought the Abit NF7-S instead and I couldn't be happier. The Abit board runs as stable as any Asus board I ever had.

The Asus is more expensive because of the name I would guess; Asus boards have always cost a premium.

Not only do asus boards cost a premium, but their quality isnt any better. Don't let people fool you into believing it is. They have just as many if not more problems than everyone else.
