asus a7n8x cpu mounting problem

just got my asus a7n8x mobo today. i placed the cpu with the lever in the up position, after putting in the cpu, i lower the lever. where the hinge of the lever is, it started to push back on the white plastic piece nearest the edge of the mobo. i examined the cpu to see if i mounted it in the right position which i did. seeing it in the right position, i continued anyways. i went ahead and installed the heatsink fan which uses the mounting clips. however 10 minutes into installing other stuff, i heard something snap. it was the piece of plastic which holds the mounting clip. the lever budged the piece of plastic, and the strength of the tension caused by the mounting clip accumulating in the lever and plastic hook that holds the mounting clip to break off.

i do not want to return this mobo because of time, but if i get a heatsink fan that uses the mounting holes, can i just manually slide the cpu to its correct position and install a new heatsink fan that uses mounting scews. or do i just take the time to return the mobo?

 
Love to help, but I can't understand what you're saying here 😕 Might need a diagram or something.

So, what broke? The latch that seats the CPU in the socket, or the 3 clips on the socket? If you aren't getting good contact right now, I wouldn't risk running your CPU until you replace the HS or whatever broke.

whats broke is the latch that seats the cpu into place. this is attached to the 3 clips of the socket which also broke.

so if i get a heatsink that using the mounting holes, can i just put the cpu in place, slide the socket in the direction it's suppossed to be (even without the latch guidance), and everything be fine? or is the latch a crucial part in keeping the cpu properly aligned?
 
If I'm understanding you correctly, you no longer have the ability to clamp the lever, causing the CPU to be locked into position.
If this is so, you'll find that the mechanical bond between the pins (male) on the CPU and the receptacles (female) on the socket will not be established. And this spring-loaded bond is necessary to maintain the proper electrical continuity between these pins and receptacles.

Yep, if the locking lever broke then the board is useless. You might have a hard time returning it since it's physically damaged. 🙁
