I've just tried to upgrade an ageing GeForce 3 to a cheap FX5700 card to last me until I can afford an Opteron system some time next year. I have tried two Peak FX5700VE cards and an XFX FX5700LE and experience the same problems with all of them which leads me to beleive there is a compatibility issue.
Basically, if you enable AGP and try to use the 3D features of the card, Xwindows locks up and I have to contect to the machine remotely in order to shut it down. Underclocking my bus speed to 100MHz helped, I could get half way though loading in a Doom3 savegame before it crashed.
I thought the problem may be power, so I tried removing all non-esential PCI cards, and powering my drives from an old AT PSY I have lying around, same result.
I have tried upgrading the drivers to the latest (1.0.6629) and am already running the latest version of X.
Googling around, and searching this forums finds several people having problems with 5700's and no answers.
So what cards do work on this board, do any of you have this board and have a working modernish graphics card if so what is it?
Please dont suggest any ATI cards as the ATI Linux drivers are horrible.
Edit: I updated the BIOS to the latest (1004) too, BTW.
