Hello all smart people,

I would like any opinions/reviews regarding the Asus A7M266-D. I am thinking about using it to replace a complete pain in the ass, Tyan Thunder K7 (ya, the one in my signature line ;) . The new machine will not have any SCSI requirements.

Any good or bad thoughts either way?

Thanks

Riles

Agree, not enough 32bit slots :( I also had a bad initial experience with a Tyan Tiger MP 1.01 board - but once we swapped it for the 1.03 board, it's been smooth sailing. And you can use all the PCI slots on the Tiger, along with the USB. I'd probably get the Tiger MP, rev3 (<-- important)

That's going to adorn the case of my PC soon. And for PCI, Promise Ultra133TX2 in one of the 64-bit slots, Netgear NIC in a PCI, SB Live! and then an AGP video...oh yeah...1394 but if I get the 8500DV I'm covered there.

32-bit cards will not work in the 64-bit slots. 760MP chipset boards (Tyan Tiger/Thunder) have 64-bit, 33MHz, 5-volt slots that will accept 32-bit cards. The 760MPx boards (A7M266-D, MSI's board, etc.) have 64-bit, 66MHz, 3.3-volt slots that will not accept 32-bit (5-volt) cards. They are keyed different as well so they wouldn't physically fit anyway.

It will work if you set the JEN to Jumper Mode, however you'll NOT be able to overclock:(

Hopefully, the future BIOS revision will fix that problem. Read this post

I'm sorry that the above is in error. The PCI USB 2.0 card that came with the board will work in the 64 bit slot even if you set the JEN to Jumper Free mode. The FSB dip switches should ALL be set to OFF in order for the board to boot.:D

I don't have any other PCI card that have the key for 64 bit slot that I can try.

Standard PCI cards will wok in the slots as long as they are keyed on both ends. I am running in jumper free mode and have the following cards installed

Slot 1 - D-Link network card
Slot 2 - USB 2.0 Card
Slot 3 - Empty...........Audigy will go here
Slot 4 - Advansys 3940 U2W SCSI
Slot 5 - AMI Express 500 SCSI Raid

I just flashed from the 1004 bios to the 1005d beta and it resolved the sharing issue with slot 1. This like all other boards is shared with the agp slot. Now when it boots into the os I see that the video controller has it's own IRQ. I am running XP and everything is good at this point. The board is the first revision 1.03 not 1.04. I just need to get a matched pair of 1800 MP's to get this really cookin!
