I have an Asus a7a266 motherboard with an AMD Athalon 1.4 Ghz processor. The specs says it only supports up to 1.2Ghz and it has worked fine up to now for a year and a half. I now have a 1.6 Ghz AMD athalon xp I could put in, would there be a critical problem by doing this? Should I do this or stay away from it. Just concerned about hurting my motherboard.
Thanks for any help,
Drew

You will need to check the revision of your motherboard. This is printed on the motherboard itself between the PCI slots, next to the A7A266 name, in very small letters.

If your board is a rev 1.10 or above, it can support both Athlon and Athlon XP processors.

If your board is a rev 1.03 or 1.04 (the most common revisions), then it will only support Athlon processors up to 1.4GHz.

Also, I guess a BIOS update to the most recent would help, no?

How does that thing work? Is it stable? Last time I remember having an ALi chipset was on my old K6-2...
