I have an Asus A7A 266. I had to reformat the hard drive. Now sound only comes from one of my speakers. I am using the onboard sound. I have installed the latest drivers and that didn't fix the problem. It worked before so it should work now. Anyone have any ideas.

Did you check the connector from speaker to sound output to make sure it's plugged in all the way?

I checked that. It's not the problem. I think I remember having this problem two years ago when I first built this computer. I don't remember how I solved it.

Did you turn down the hardware accelerator for the sound card before?

Open up the CMI Sound card control applet. Switch the output settings from whatever you have it to 4 or 6 channel, and then switch it back. See if that helps.

Or try this. Open the windows volume control panel then with the 4 channel volume or whatever it is - click to mute it then unmute it. I think thats what I had to do every once in awhile when I had a external 8738 sound card. I don't quite remember anymore.
