Asus A7A 266 acceleration mode in cmos ??

I was wondering exactly what internal peripherals determine wether or not my system will handle acceleration mode enabled in the cmos ? Does this setting really speed things up ?
I tried it with my current config. and the system freezes during post, right after scanning pci devices. The only internal component I am questioning is the quality / speed of my DDR ram. I have 2x256 MB 2100 samsung non registered non ecc with a 2.5 latency.
The rest of the system is described below:

Mid grade mid tower case w/ sparkle 300 watt pwr supply
Asus A7A 266 mobo w/ integrated sound
Amd 1600+ XP cpu (1.4 GHZ)
Ati Radeon 8500 video (retail box)
High Point ATA 133 controller (retail box)
2x IBM 40 GB hard drives @ 7200 rpm (OEM)
Intel 10/100 NIC (OEM)
Sony 16x DVDROM (OEM)
Yamaha 16x CDRW (OEM)
Mitsumi floppy (OEM)
