I've been recently looking to get an All-in-Wonder x1800XL to get my feet wet with some video editing, but I can't help but wonder at that Asus 7800 GT right above. It's a completely silenced 7800GT without a fan in sight, and to boot it's got a huge memory boost over the standard version. I'm a big fan of silence, and the thought of possibly having a completely silent video card in my setup might be too much to pass up. Well, considering how loud most stock coolers are...

I know the price is pretty steep for a 7800 GT, but at a glance everything looks good to me. I can't confirm it since this hasn't been a widely acclaimed card with lots of reviews, but it doesn't look half bad. The only thing I'm left wondering about is if a P180 would have adequate airflow to work well with this card. What do you think, is it worth it or would I be better off with something else?

well do you want your card not to make sound then buy it otherwise a 7800GT for $270 (@newegg) is better choice.

The temperature of the N7800GT under load seems directly related to the airflow of the CPU fan. Those with a weak CPU fan can expect to see higher temperatures than those with a CPU fan that has more airflow.

However, users of heatsinks that do not have a fan in the usual position over the CPU heatsink (and under the N7800GT's heatsink, in this case) might want to think twice about getting this card, since such a setup would probably mean little airflow over the N7800GT's heatsink and therefore overheating problems. Users with particularly tall CPU heatsinks may also want to avoid this card.

A regular 7800GT with an NVSilencer would be better. I have to stick my ear next to it to listen to it... it's a lot cheaper and as close to silent as you'll get with a fan.

If you're willing to spend $400 on a card, why not get an X1900 AIW?

They're being sold for $400? Guess I didn't get the memo. I haven't seen them for sale anywhere. The thing that bugs me is that given the big boost in performance over the x1800 series I would assume that the x1900 AiW's single-slot cooler would be almost completely inadequate. Although I guess the Acceleros are coming out in February some time...

Decisions, decisions. But yeah, I think that little blurb from the article has pretty much convinced me against buying the silent 7800 GT.

yep the zalman VF700 even on 12v is super quiet.

for those who prefer the heat going out the case the NV silencer is for you, though i have just seen my mates 6800U with a silencer on and we just found out why it was over heating......the Heatsink fins were caked with dust,...... lazy bastard cant of cleaned his case or his room for years.
