Asus 6800 Ultra Artifacts

Hey Guys,

Recently All my games have started getting artifacts in them after about 10-20 mins of gameply artifacts start to appear on my textures......

A few games to note are:- Act of war - Splinter Cell 3 demo - CS:Source - 3DMark05

They always occur after a short period, this is i guess because of heat but the card still runs within the specs.....it usually reaches over 100 degress celcius after bout 20mins of play in intensive games, ive recorded it reaching 105 with rivatuner. it idles at round 62-65

This never occured before, although i have flashed the bios on the card to a few different ones as the original bios i couldnt use i would get freezes all over the place, Im currently using thugrooks GTU-2 6800GT Bios.

I'm not overclocking this card over its specs which i run all my games @ 425/1100.

Should i return this card where i purchased it and ask them to rma it? i'm thinking of doing this as i'm also returning my A8V Mobo because it has a faulty network printer port.

Is there any suggestions to try? Overall i think the 6 series cards are a big mess 🙁

try underclocking it to 400/1100 which are stock ultra speeds then RMA it to asus- I love the 6 series ive owned a 6800, 3 6800GTs, and 2 Ultras none of 'em were bad and they all had exceptionally good overclocks. they do however as you state run hot and throttle if you overclock to high.

Its the 1 slot cooler.

I ran it for a while on 400/1100 i couldn't pickup any artifacts n i ran 3dmark 05 game test 1 bout 5 times in a row and couldnt see any...usually @ 425/1100 i can see them on the 1st or 2nd run...so i cranked it back to 425 and sure enough they were there again...

this is unacceptable...i think every 6800 card should handle 425 easy and atleast 430....i used to run 425 all the time...so the card is faulty if it cant run it now. maybe it could be a bios issue? dunno...i might try the original bios again.

It might be getting to hot, 100 C load is HOT. I would only find the most 80C load acceptable. Go and buy the NV Silencer 5, it has my Ultra running at 51-54C and improved my load a lot. That one slot cooler must be  all the other ultras use a 2 slot.

EDIT: NV Silencer 5 will be your best bet since you voided your warrenty, if you say your gonna rma, some people are gonna flame you, trust me. From what I see, the GT cooler or whatever Asus uses isn't enough.

Its obviously getting too hot. But why, is is a mystery. Since you say t worked fine before. Have you monitored your temps when all was fine?

youre going to rma the card because it doesnt overclock well anymore, you even bios flashed the card? Rollo can smell threads like this the moment he turns on his computer. OP beware

BTW, 100 c boils water, I think that is a bit too hot for the chip

yep, i agree lava. not certain why someone would think they get to return something they broke. not all cards will do the same thing!!! if yours still runs at the speeds that you were guarranteed, then there is nothing wrong with your card!

is this a joke? i mean, it runs at stock with no artifacts yet you feel entitled to an OC so you are going to return it? after flashing the bios several times? 400 is the stock core for that card, no?

just want to be clear.

Calm down guys the asus card comes with 425mhz core stock like my eVGA does and so does BFG. Tell me.. when you turn your computer on and hte gpu fan spins when you get into windows will it slow down? you should be able to hear it. If so its not supposed to on that asus. Get the gainward Expertool and you should be able to max the fan speed out and leave it that way. Also have you recently changed drivers?

my warranty isnt really void....if bios flashing voids it...no bigdeal ill just flash back to original and whod know? doeasnt harm anyone. its stupid to be void with a bios...its just software, its not like ive taken the heatsink apart. and maybe i wouldn't need 2 flash if nvidia/asus could make a working and compatible card.

Yeh i have recently changed drivers, and im currently using 71.84, ill try a few diff drivers and older ones and see if it helps.

the asus card comes stock at 400/1100 2d and 425/1100 3d, so it is meant to run 425 gauranteed. theres no way im keeping this card if im going to have to settle with 400...thats just wrong. esp when you pay over $1000 for this card, youd atleast expect maybe a high qaulity card...

i was weary of the 1 slot cooler design...but hey asus made it that way and spec it as 425/1100 so thats what i get what i pay for. The guy from the shop i bought it from said it makes no diff it still runs fine..but what would they know bout comps....oviously its not performing to spec so i'm entitled to a replacement.

dont bother with flames u have no valid reason to flame. and there not effective.

-ok on a better note, im going to test my original bios (i modified it slightly to have same 2d/3d clocks to not freeze) and try a few diff driver sets .

thanx for your replies n suggestions.
