Asus 5870 "V2" - Matrix's little brother?

Some will remember me posting that I'm getting 5870 2GB CF, then it was GTX 470 SLI as of yesterday. Well this morning I decided to cancel the 470 pre-order. I want solid DX10 and DX11 performance; and despite Fermi's strong showing in DX11 apps, it's damn hard not to consider everything 5870 already offers. So two of these Asus V2 5870's are already packed. Newegg, packing orders on Sunday. I love you man!

I couldn't find any reviews, but am feeling pretty good about this one. Here's what I know. I saw a PCB pic a few weeks back, it looked very similar to Matrix's, with like 8 power phases or something. The cooler is direct contact with 4 heatpipes and has a solid copper fin array. It has a large diameter fan which I'm betting will do the job without excessive noise. It has one 8-pin and one 6-pin power connectors, but only 1GB memory.

So with extra power, extra phases, voltage tweaking, and what appears to be a great cooler, I'm hoping to do 950 in Crossfire while yielding good temps with acceptable fan noise. The deal is sealed this time. I'll post board pics, fan specs, and some numbers.

I'd like more memory but I can't ignore the benchmarks, an oc'd 5870 does very nicely in nearly all scenarios. I have Intel G2's in Raid 0 and DDR3 2000, should move data pretty good.

Those are just flat-out sexy. I wish they made a 5850 with that style cooler.

I like that PCB design looks very cool with black. But to be honest, xfired 58xx needs more ram to go higher, but that's probably the next refresh for these cards coming up.

IMO the ram wasn't doing jack without AA & Eyefinity. Even then I only saw a true framebuffer limitiation happen in like 5 benchies.

Could change going forward, and with custom made HD texture mods.

I'm selective when it comes to considering Newegg reviews. This reviewer has a respectable rig and sounds like he knows his stuff. Damn nice if those temps/oc hold true. No mention of voltage though. I'm ready for my two. They arrive Wednesday, my birthday :)

Pros: Copper fins, larger fan, ability to give it additional voltage if needed, pretty quiet under 40% fan speed, stays pretty cool even overclocked! New Cat 10.3's work prefeclty with SmartDoctor and GamerOSD

Cons: None that I can think of except waiting for this to finally come back instock. This is the new version of the EAH5870, and it is not listed on the Asus website. Smaller cases might have a hard time fitting the card in since the power plugs are straight from the rear and not out the top like the original model.

Other Thoughts: Have it running at 1005 on the GPU and 1301 on the memory clock. Still stays under 60 degress at load with the fan at 36%. Scored over 24000 3D marks in 3D Mark Vantage!!!

System specs are:
I7 860 @ 4040 GHz (20*202)
EVGA P55 Classified 200
Corsair Dominator GT PC316000 DDR3 @ 2020 8-8-8-24-59 1T
Asus EAH5870 V2 @ 1005 GPU/1301 Memory Stock Cooler
Corsair HX1000 Power Supply
Soundblaster X-Fi Fatality
LG WH10LS30 Blu-ray Burner
LG UH10LS20 Blu-ray Combo
(2) WD Caviar BlackWD6402AAEX SATA3 64MB Cache Drives in RAID0
SilverStone Temjin TJ09 Tower Case - Black
Watercooled by Swiftech Apogee-XT, MCP355 Pump with modded top, Black Ice GT Stealth 240 XFLO
