hi,

my system will "Black Screen" then hang every time after runing Furmark few second.(1.7.0 or 1.6.5, Benchmarking or Stability

Test also same problem.)
when the "black screen" happen, the 2nd LED at the back of the card light up! ( total 4 diagnostic Leds at the back)
and the VDDC Current increase to 82.6A ( i use GPU-Z to monitor.) what is VDDC ?? is it a problem?
reset botton cant help to restart the system, need to power off the system and restart again!

i found this on amd forums :
Diagnostic LED meanings for the HD4890 card

D601: VDDC_FAULT

D1601: critical temperature fault

D1602: AUX Hot Plug/Unplug Fault (upper connector)

D1603: AUX Hot Plug/Unplug Fault (lower connector)

but i not sure the 2nd led is which one, because no any indication near the Led.

GPU core temp is 53C /68C (idle/Gameing) but the PCB is very hot (can't put my finger on it more that 2 sec!)

but no problem play game ...(Crysis, UT3, FEAR2,3DMArk06...)

My system :
Athlon X2 5400+
Asus 4890 1GB DDR5 Super ML Cap (Twin Fan)
Asus M3A78-EMH-HDMI Bios 1107
CORSIAR MS2 6400C5DHX D2 1GB*2
WD 1TB Black
SILVERSTONE STRIDER 560W (12V1 and 12V2 is 20A 20A) should be enough!
XP SP3 English version.
Dell 2407WFP-HC

i try to put back my old card - ASUS 3850 256mb , the 3850 can run Furmark without any problem. so i try to test this 4890 at another system, and the black screen happen again!
the second system is :
AMD X2 5400+
ACBEL IPOWER 460W,(12V1 and 12V2 is 21A 20A)
Abit NF-M2S,
Seagate 500GB SATA
Kingston DDR2 KINGSTON PC 800 2GB.

any 4890 user got this problem?? is it the card problem? because i only brought it 5 days ago...

Thanks.

What do you mean? That thread already has proof that some reference cards can run furmark indefinitely. The problem does NOT affect all cards. It's of my opinion that if your card can not run it, you should return it because it's defective.

well those 2 tests confirm you have one of the "bad" cards with the faulty VRMs. if it's really an issue you can try and return the card and get a non reference board based model

OP, how is your card running actual games? It makes absolutely NO sense to return a perfectly good card if it runs all games just fine, but can't run Furmark or OCCT.
Are you having any problems in any games? If so, THEN you should RMA it. But not for Furmark. IMHO.

so far no problem with game... ( Crysis Warhead, RiseOfTheArgonauts, UT3, FEAR 2...)
but why a "good card" can't run some program....

Well, ever heard of Linpack? Can cause your CPU to throttle down or even shut down. It's just a specific application causing your hardware to reach its limits. Doesn't mean that the hardware is bad, just that is has limits. Even the most demanding games don't come remotely close to that sort of load on the VRMs of your card. If your games run fine I don't really see the point of RMA'ing it. I mean, surely you don't run Furmark and OCCT daily?

I agree. I don't even know why people run Furmark. As you have said, no game even comes close to stressing the video card as Furmark does. And you don't even get any enjoyment out of it. (one would hope). Use your card for what it was designed for, games, and enjoy the hell out of it. Good card.

I run Furmark just to hear my video card SQUEEEEEAL! (Choke whine)

In all honesty though - Furmark and OCCT failing within the first few SECONDS doesn't sound like a good long-term card. If it were crashing after 20 or 30 seconds, maybe. But 1 or 2 seconds? No.

Furmark and distributed computing put similar loads on the GPU. If it can't run furmark, I would definately RMA it. It's probably not functional for doing DC either.

Just like no software should be able to make a CPU fail, so should no software be able to make a GPU fail. The fact that some seem to be able to do that indicates an engineering failure on the part of the hardware mfgs. No one should stand for that.

What about software that bypasses the thermal protection and shuts down the fan and overclocks the core and mem by 100%? Do you think that software could make it crash.

Go run Folding@Home or something similar and you will see that the VRM current is far from the limit. Same for games.

Also, since OCing software will most definately cause your hardware to shut down (when you overdo it), surely it means that every piece of hardware is faulty? ATi have used profiles to not allow Furmark put such a stress on the card, but the "smart" people just rename the file and have it stress the card abnormally anyway... Go figure.

As for the OP, leave the computer running 3D Vantage looped for the night or something similar. If you wake up and everything's running A-OK, you're fine. Try running Crysis for a few hours and see if anything happens. Again, if not, your card is fine and you shouldn't worry.
