The legal size capability is nice, but if you don't need it,
the Epson 1200U that J&R has (or had) for sale for $105 including
shipping is a better scanner. Not just better for the money. Better,
period.

The Umax consumer grade scanners are, by-and-large, OK but not great.
Mediocre image quality, mediocre (or poor, depending on the model)
speed. And Umax support for new operating systems has traditionally
been poor (something to think of if you plan to keep the scanner
for very long).

Have been using this scanner for over a year. Exellent imade quality, superb optical resolution (for the money). I did not appreciate the convenience of legal size scanner until started using one.

Well, I would say that the reviews in that link you provided
are basically fluff and nonsense. I don't get the impression
that the person writing them had any particular expertise with
hardware. On the Web, everyone can be a critic, and most of them
are...

I would also point out that the reviewer noted the very slow
scan speeds (>1 minute for b&w, >4 minutes for color) at 42bits.
He didn't mention lower bit rate speeds, but experience with
numerous Umax scanners is that they are slow...If you plan to
do much scanning, you grow to HATE a slow scanner. He also didn't
compare the lower bit rate scans with those from the other scanners.
He liked the intolerably slow bit rate scans. But were the lower
bit rate scans as good? We'll never know.

Bottom line: If you want this, go for it. But I know I will never
buy another consumer grade Umax. At the cheap end, get Epson, and
if you're willing to pay more (and more than it's worth) get
an office-grade HP (e.g. 6300).
