Astigmatism?

I decided I needed glasses and went into Lenscrafters - my vision is fine but in class the board is a bit blurry, and glasses could help driving. Apparently I have astigmatism. I was wondering what that means, and how will that affect how much I need to wear my glasses and the future of my eyes. Thanks!
 
Technically, it is an irregular curvature of the eye. Mine is really bad... It is easily corrected with glasses or contacts, and may not be permanent.
