Is this just another stupid doomsday myth or what?

Well 73% of statics are made up on the spot so I would say chances are the guy is full of it.

I know a couple of years ago there was a real threat of an asteroid hitting on Halloween but I haven't heard anything about it this year.

hot damn, you mean that whenever I get shocked by static electricity, its fake 73% of the time?

68% is way too high. Most scientists are currently putting the chances of a hit around 40%. I don't think I need to remind you that life on this planet as we know it is going to be eradicated if an asteroid of this magnitude hits. It's overkill in fact. The environmental effects of one much smaller would be enough to obliterate mankind. It really sucks because we're not at the point yet where we can deal with asteroids of this size. We can see them coming, but can't do anything about it. In a few decades perhaps, but now we just don't have the capabilities. Personally I can't sleep at night because 40% is VERY high. I mean you have a 40% chance of not living through the end of the year. That sucks. Also if it doesn't hit this year it has a 70% chance of hitting us within the next decade. If we beat those odds, then we won't have to worry about this asteroid until it comes back around in the 24th century.

Man, it SUCKS.

EDIT: Don't know about you lot, but I'm maxing out my credit cards and going on vacations, because we have less than a 20% chance of living through the end of this decade.

I made it up. Your roomate needs to stop drinking and getting high :)

No asteroid will hit us. One need only look on CNN. No story about an asteroid in halloween, is there? If one was going to hit you can rest assured that we'd all have heard about it.

Unfortunately Skoorb is right. Nasa FER radar (Far Engaging Radio) has detected a good sized rock. Most of that info is under wraps, not so much classified but not released to the general public. Unfortunately, there IS (right now) a 47% chance it will hit. Those estimates are based on what information we have. Right now its not alot. So while that percentage may seem a bit high, its also a tenative estimate. Thats the good news. The bad news, the size of the detected object is large enough it would be the famed Planet Killer. The worse news is as they further examine and plot its course they can better figure its trajectory. And as of now that could mean a lesser, or greater chance of striking Earth.
Most of the info isnt released to the general public, in fact the FER radar system itself has only been operational for a few months at best. The object had been detected earlier but they couldnt accurately predict its path until the new FER radar came online.
More as I find out.

Good one. The size of Texas? Can someone explain how a rock as big as the biggest atseroids there are has been undetected till now? It would stand out like a beacon in a telescope if it was within years of the earth. To hit in October, it would have to be inside the orbit of Mars right now, wouldn't it?

Look at it like this. If you have a canvas the size of the wall of your house, the asteroid would be the size of an M&M and your telescope can view, at any one time, a area the size of a pinhead how long would it take you to find that M&M? More importantly, how long would it take you to find the M&M, and then plot its trajectory through space thus realizing its on a potential collision course?
