Assumption: If you are in IT you should not use anything AOL?

Is that a bad assumption to have? It occurred to me when I met a help desk guy who was using all kinds of AOL stuff. I immediately discounted him as an IT professional. I feel like I racially profiled him for no reason at all. How terrible is that?

I don't know about that. It is okay to use AIM as long as you aren't using the real aim program, using something like trillian or gaim or something. I know nothing about AOL video. But I agree with the OP if I see anyone using AOL anything they are instantly considered a noob.

the key is that if you start using something else at work ( like trillian) people start asking questions and wasting your time..

GAIM hidden in the system tray FTW;)

Definitely. That and Aim Ad Hack, because some people like software that conforms to all protocols...like direct connect.

I was floored when I had to email something to his personal email and he told me it was an aol.com address. I made a comment, along the lines of "no, really give me your real address" and he didn't say anything. I kinda forgot about until recently when I again had to email him and the aol addy came up.

I saw the webmail interface and asked if he wanted a gmail account and he looked at me like I was crazy?

It makes sense since his first line of action is to defrag every pc he works on. The users are real happy when he continually defrags over and over again.
