Assuming time travel were possible would you......

Let's say your present day self had a time machine that could only go backwards (and this is all based on the assumtion that if you go into the past people and things from that time will be there) would you use it to impart knowledge on your past self to alter your life?

The only other rule I can think of is no going back in time to give a sports almanac to yourself, or winning lotto numbers. This question pertains specifically to choices you've made in life that have led you down certain paths such as meeting people, or not meeting people, getting hurt, hurting someone else, etc., etc..

I mean, there are some times in my life where things REALLY REALLY got sh1tty, but I am where I am today because of every event from my past. For example, I have full custody of my 8 year old son. He was concieved out of a very damaging relationship with a very abusive woman. Would I go through another 4 years of being with her just to have my son......yes, in a heartbeat.

However, I'm curious if others would alter their life's path if given the chance.

If you answer yes please post what you'd go back and change if you don't mind.

everything that has happened so far in my life was meant to happen and lead up to where i am now.
I am shocked when i think of things in my past... "if that didn't happen, i wouldnt have met so and so".

To be very honest, i would not change anything but i would have had my surgery before i got married. that is all.

Do you think something so minor as altering the date of your surgery could have drasticly changed your life forever?

Maybe just to tell myself not to do a certain thing that caused me to get fired or something like that. but nothing major.

no, but that is the only thing i would change. everything in my life(good and bad) have made me the person i am today. I would not change any of that.
I will look back at my wedding photos the rest of my life though.
It might sound shallow, but I waited my whole life to get married to an amazing man and have a perfect wedding.

that is all

Would you then have two pathways in time? Two of yourself existing on separate planes of existence?

This question "assumes" a lot of things, the biggest assumption being it's not complicated like that.

Franky Jr.- Did you land a better job after getting fired?

I would go back to the summer of 2001, and tell myself NOT to take my dad's car out for a joyride. Because of the accident I got into, I started driving at age 20, instead of 17.

I injured my knee pretty seriously when I was young. I remember the exact moment the first time I injured it (maybe a partial ACL tear at the time?) and it just got worse over the next 10 years of my life (grade school/highschool) until the point Im at today (9 months out of reconstructive surgery). Had I not injured my knee so severly I would have pursued a career in soccer. Hell, I still tried to... but my knee isn't even close to rehabbed enough to play competitively. I wonder how things would have turned out had I a healthy knee my whole life.

Yes - I would go back in time to this last Tuesday and tell myself to wait 2 days before I order my monitor. Stupid Dell!

I would have worked harder at my job, which would probably have led to me getting the full time job I applied for at the same place (I didn't get it for the sole reason that I was unreliable). It would have been harder to squeeze time for a relationship, but the relationship would have lasted longer if I was didn't have to move due to financial reasons.

These are of course extremely recent events, so I don't know how much better or worse things will get now.

I probably would have tried to cash in on the dot com bubble instead of joining the military in 97.

LOL....spoken like a true AT'er!

And NanoStuff, while I agree that would be an awsome thing to do I'm talking more along the lines of "I wouldn't have shot that man in Reno just to watch him die" kinda stuff more than monetary gain stuff. We all know what stocks to buy should we ever go back in time......Enron baby!

I will go back and change some events.

1. Buy MS <1976> and tech stocks and cash out before 2000.
2. Don't take some of the useless classes in college and study harder.
3. Don't date some of the gals and date others instead.
4. Change about 5 events <private> in my life such as don't go to work for one of the companies I used to work for.

Other than that, I wont change anything else.

Edit: I read your OP again so there are some more.

I will work harder in some of the relationship. What if we did work harder then, we would be together now? <sighs>

I wish I have a remote control for the time of my life, with just a pause button. That way, I can enjoy those most precious moments for as long as I want.

But, time travel would be a luxury and only a fool would deny himself of it, if it was available.

If I could, I would change a few things here and there, but nothing major. Mainly to fix the mistakes that I've made.

This thread reminds me of that Star Trek TNG episode where Q lets Picard go back and undo the chain of events that led to a bar fight where he gets stabbed in the heart, but then his future self dead ends in mediocrity. It's our past decisions that influence what present decisions we'd make to undo those past decisions, we wouldn't be who we are if we could change our mistakes, and then we would have different things we'd change. It's like a weird paradox.
