Assuming I set my drive to master and slave rather then cable select, would it be possible to use the IDE cable backward

I mean with normal IDE cables the ends that connects to the drives are seperated by a few inches, then the end that connects to the motherboard is about twice that distance away. Due to my drive and case setup, I need a little extra room from one drive to the next on the cable, so i was wondering if I could plug the opposite end of the cable into the motherboard, then the end closest to it to my first drive and then the end farthest away to the last drive?

This can be done but not w/ ATA 66 and up / 80 conductor cables still works fine w/ ATA 33 (40 pin) cables though so if its for Optical drives you'd be ok but not hard drives
