Asst. Principal tries to break up fight; gets thrown headfirst into plateglass window

RALEIGH, N.C. — Raleigh police said Tuesday that they plan to charge an Athens Drive High School student who allegedly shoved a school administrator into a plate-glass window during a lunchtime fight.

Steven Miller, an assistant principal, was taken to a local hospital around noon Tuesday after he was injured while trying to break up the altercation.

He was treated and later released.

Investigators did not identify the student or say what charges might be filed.

Students said there were numerous fights within about 15 minutes and that Miller was trying to break up one of those, near the cafeteria.

Sophomore McKenzie McCarthy said a student grabbed Miller's shoulders and shoved him into the glass.

"To see him just manhandled like that, it was really scary," she said. "It's like something that happened right in front of you, and your principal is harmed, and you're like, 'What are you going to do?'"

Mike Charbonneau, a spokesman for the Wake County Public School System, said school administrators are looking into what started the fights but that none of them appeared to be related.

"Safety and security is the top priority for all of the students in Wake County, and anytime an incident happens, our security staff has procedures and protocols in place," Charbonneau said. "They jump right in to ensure that all students stay safe in the process."

Charbonneau did not say what disciplinary action might be taken against students.

I remember a big brawl back in my high school. I think it was my junior or senior year. The whole place just erupted into a storm of violence. I still remember seeing two of the gym teachers go right into the fray to break it up
(they were both ex pro football players.)

I think the entire police force for Des Plaines was in the school that afternoon.

We had arguably the best high school in my city (our public district was basically cut up from other areas near/within the city's "main" public district), but even then, class sizes were right around 500 (my senior year, the freshman class was 600ish though)... and with that size of student body, with 2000ish students mucking about, 500 or so in each lunchroom block... fights were regular.

It wasn't always in the cafeteria. Usually, it wasn't in the cafeteria.
But there were fights. I'm exaggerating now, but I'd say it was more likely to see a fight any given day than see a day without a single incident.

They weren't always terrible (injury-wise), but most of them were simply terrible fights.

It was a pretty diverse school, but fairly "average" in terms of family income and whatnot.
Or, to put it another way, we most certainly were not an inner-city school. Far from it.

Then again, our city is taking a slide into the depths currently occupied by Detroit. Thankfully, our city is at least clawing at the walls, seeking purchase on the light shining down from the top of the pit. Not sure if we'll climb out or not though.
We need Chrysler (and GM to some extent) to grow strong and remain there (specifically Jeep), we need glass to remain important, and alternative energies to actually hit the energy scene with fervor and remain there.

Raleigh is great--if you don't mind suburbia. I was born/grew up there. It's nice...


btw: Athens Drive = Josh Hamilton's high school.
