Assistant Director of Housing just called me...

(kinda big, mean guy you don't want to get on the bad side of)...and asked, "Can you explain to me why you are soliciting in the halls??"

Oops. Sounds like some whinebox (probably an RA) ratted on me for some unknown reason! I've been sliding flyers underneath the doors of rooms here in the dorm advertising my computer services, support and products. I get flyers under my door all the time for campus-sponsored events and organizations, but to most people including myself, it's just spam! Even if it is 'Approved'! I'm providing products and services that, while also may not be applicable to everyone, it's sure as heck at least twice as applicable to other students here in the dorms than 'FREE PIZZA! Come listen to our guest speaker on The Endangerment of Porcupines at 7:30p!'. :| But I probably can't get my business approved.

So my question is this: as a business student who is learning about the free market, free enterprise and capitalism, who has a greater deal of I.T. knowledge than arguably 99% of the people in his dorm, who has a business he's started from the teachings he's learned from his business classes taught at that University, not be allowed to provide viable and worthwhile products and services that most other students need and want? Sounds like Communism to me- nobody can escape advertising. Not even the shorts on the butts of Olympic athletes. The Ass. Director told me he doesn't have a problem with me working on other's computers, but that private businesses cannot solicit on campus. Yet I'm a student. Or am I really any different? Do I have a case to call him up sometime and ask about these questions I have? The students have been responding very favorably to it and are thankful I'm there close by, with the stuff they need, will warranty it, with great prices and a smile. Am I the only one that sees something wrong here? :disgust:

Is it against the rules for students to solicit? Pass out fliers? It's not against the law. If not, then you should tell him to shove it.

You should have just said "I'm soliciting because I want to make something of myself! If that means I must sell my body for other's pleasure, so be it. My body is a special thing and if someone wants to pay me for services... I'll take the money. I also do computer work." :D

You have not learned anything in college.

Your computer services are no more important than "FREE PIZZA" damn it.

Maybe you should try the word of mouth route now......... seeing that you have some customers from your flyer promotion.

Agreed. If they have a policy in place that says you have to get prior approval, then you must do so. The policy is in place for a reason (the school could probably get sued if the KKK went around slipping flyers under doors). If they won't approve it, then that is another battle that must be fought. If they are passing out pizza coupons, then obviously private businesses are being allowed to advertise, so the AD's argument there is bunk.

At my school, it doesn't matter whether your fliers are approved or not, slipping fliers under the door is 100% verboten. The rule-of-thumb is that if you can't stick the flier up with a tack or a staple, then you can't put it there. As a Peer Advisor I spent many a day crusading against door-sliders. The little guy from the Chinese food place is like friggin GHOST DOG! He's like a NINJA and he throws the menus like SHURIKENS that fly under the doors as he flies down the hallway and disappears like cold winter wind escapes down the alley way.
FU-WAH!
*shudder*

Anyway, my advise to you is don't push it. Find out the legally approved posting policy, and stick it to the letter.
Or just go "pro" and work for the school. By the time I graduated I was getting $150/week to troubleshoot one or 2 issues a week.

Under the doors might be a little sketchy. I think you should just fall back on posting flyers in public areas such as the lounge, or on campus.

That's a good idea- maybe I'll look into getting a campus job. But oftentimes during peak business, I'm making double that a week. Once I made that in a day.

Exactly what I was planning on doing now- backup Plan B (which would have been implemented anyway ;))

Not looking to get laid, man- just to get better known to increase business and maybe score a date at the least (I didn't mention that I only distributed flyers underneath doors on the girl's floors)!

I dunno about your school, but at my school there was no rule that said you couldn't freelance in addition to working for RES.net, as long as you made it absolutely clear to clients whether you were functioning independently or as part of the school's support program. Our RES.net jobs didn't include any office hours. You had remote access to a bucket of trouble tickets, and as long as you responded to them in the specific time frame given, you were doing a good job. Also, we weren't "on duty" on weekends.
If your school's program is anything like that, you'll find you can easily collect your paycheck from them and still run your cottage industry.

It is easier to get forgiveness than permission. :)

True.

Well, the FIRST time, anyway, it's true. After being nabbed the first time, your best bet is to follow the rules. Get the flyers approved before distributing them. If you raise enough stink, the university will probably not be able to find a reason to not approve the flyers and you'll be allowed to distribute them.

And in the process, you learn one of the most valuable things college can teach you: how to work the system. This lesson will be more valuable than anything you learn in the classroom.

That's a good idea- I'll have to look into that. That way I can feed from both ends of the table and it would all be beneficial.
