Assigning HDD as C: - Automatic or adjustment needed?

I have 1 hard drive, 1 floppy, 1 DVD, and 1 CD. I want the hard drive to be teh C: drive. Will the computer assign the hard drive as the C: automatically? Do I have to unplug any of the other devices prior to installing OS to achieve this?

Unplug any external drives before installing XP or they may be given letters before the HDD! That includes memory card readers.

That's exactly what happened the first time. I had an iPod and Palm plugged in and the HDD was assigned G:. Is it okay to have the the floppy (Mitsumi 7 in 1 floppy and card) plugged in?

Even if something does get switched, it's easy to change.

Control panel > Administrative tools > Computer management

click on disk managment

However you can't re-assign the system drive as 'C' if it's not already

Ah, you're right. Forgot about that.

I wouldn't trust it. I'd leave that 7 in 1 drive unplugged and install it after you've got the system up and running well.

Agreed ^ - install windows with just one HDD and one optical. then add the rest when everything is up and running
