Assessment of this card please?

I'm building a budget machine for my son and have been offered a nice deal on this card. I'm not entirely up to speed on the dizzying array of video card chipsets out there; can anyone give me a subjective assessment of how well that card will handle "moderate" gaming? Meaning, not the latest games at high resolutions, but more mundane gaming.

He's also into Minecraft, and I'm assuming this card can handle that pretty easily?

Thanks.

Minecraft, if I am not mistaken is more reliant on the CPU. A 9600GT is relatively weak, but should be sufficient for basic gaming. It can play Battlefield 3 on medium at around 30fps in single player at 1080p. That's not terrible and about equivelant to what a console would be.

That card is OLD!

It definitely is not worth looking at if you're building a computer thats relatively modern. Go look at the hd 7750. How much is the 9600?

Hrm...$25. Sounds cheap but for $99 a HD 7750 would be a lot faster. That is if you are willing to spend that much on the GPU. I don't know what type of budget you're working with.

I used to play on a 9600GT several years ago, and it was mediocre even then. I would tend to agree with this poster. Obviously as well, the 9600GT is dx9 only, so newer AAA titles would be totally out, since they require DX 10 or 11.

If you are building a computer from scratch, I would try to allocate a bit more for the gpu, since that would be a relatively small amount compared to the cost of the entire system.
I agree the 7750 would be a good choice, but barring that, you could look for a used HD5770 for less money.

I have never recommended an APU before for gaming, and I still think you should get a modern discrete card, but honestly, an A10 APU would be faster than that GPU.

I wouldnt drop more than 20$ shipped on that card, and HD4870 should be 40$ shipped max, and its easily more than twice the speed of a heavily OC'd 9600GT.
