The AR-15 is still one helluva assault rifle.

My friend has the ar-15 and damn is that thing powerful. My other friend has an AK-47 and that thing is powerful

The AR-15 isn't really that powerful. It only shoots a .223 bullet (5.56 NATO round). The AK on the other hand fires a .308 (7.62). Packs more of a punch. 🙂

I have a stripped lower receiver for an AR sitting in my room. I had my M4 money saved up, but just spent it on car repairs. I have a good friend in the Army who's going to help me put it together. Should be fun.

are there any locations where local law does allow full auto SMGs then?

From your post I would infer no.

Yes, I believe most states allow them. I think off the top of my head that they are illegal in CA and MA, but not in most states.

States with bans include:

Delaware, DC, Hawaii, Illinois, California, and Missouri (partial ban), Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, New York, and South Carolina.

Some of these states allow ownership if you hold a Class 3 license.

No class 3 in Washington state, unfortunately. *sigh* Almost enough to make me want to become an Oregonian...unfortunately I can drive though, so I'm not qualified for residency. 😉

Oh, btw, T-1 till postcount=2000.

Forgot about you guys.

In I couple years I'd be suprised if my state (IL) lets us have sharp sticks.

LOL

the way he is talking makes me know he has played too much CS.

please educate yourself before you obtain your low cost, fully automatic assault rifle which you know nothing about. your friends and neighbors will thank you.

so...you are a college student looking to buy an assault rifle for "future home defense"

you are just going to leave your AR15 chilling in your dorm room, or you get paranoid one night and maim half of the floor.

i dont think i really need to reiterate but your idea is retarded. Wtf do you mean you "dont like the way shotguns operate"? Because you dont like the way the slugs spread on cs_militia? have you ever fired a real shotgun?

ok...not to threadjack, but i am being totally serious.

Where can i buy an AK47 in california (los angeles)? they are...legal now, correct?

Not that i can even think of a gun shop around here, but regular shops might stock these now? or is this something i have to buy at a gun show?

any advice appreciated kthx

youre lame for wanting a rifle

you need tripmines, duh

Don't forget the Claymores, dude. They are awesome for those lonely, paranoid nights when you want to barricade yourself behind the couch and the LayzBoy in case some VC try to infiltrate your position.

the ak does not fite a .308 round. the .308 is 7.62*51, not the 7.62*39 that the ak fires. also, the caliber is not the only component in damage. the muzzle velocity of a 5.56 round is much higher, and it fragments when it hits as well.

get a shotty for home defense, but if you are strapped for cash and really want a rifle get a cheap Romanian wasr10 (ak47 variant) for about $275.00us. It?s less accurate at long distance than an ar15 but cheaper and more fun.

If I recall correctly, you are no older than a college freshman, right?

Do you have friends? Do they come over? Do they ever involve alcohol? Do you ever throw parties at your apartment? Or....are you still in a dorm now, or something?

Anyway, bottom line....if I assume you have an 'average' social life, i.e you aren't locked in your apartment or dorm all day, and have people in and out with alcohol and things like that...weapons are a bad idea, of any sort.

He's on Anandtech on a Friday night, do you really think he parties or has a social life besides his cs club?

All colleges I know of have rules against ANY firearms on campus. Some of them (like in hunting states) have safes where they will lock up your firearm for you for the year.

As for the AK-47, you might be able to buy a civilian (read: semiauto) version, but GL with the full-auto.

What assault rifle would you reccomend to a college student for future home protection as well as current protection? I want to go with an assault rifle over a shot gun because i hate shotguns (just do not like the way they operate) I need it to be really reliable and last for, hopefully, the rest of my life. Is the AR15 or the M4 really worth the extra cash over an AK47? Or is there another assault rifle that would be of better use? I dont really want to spend a lot of money.

if i were to go for an AK47, would you guys reccomend the 5.56MM or the 7.62MM version? Also, does the country of origin where the AK was built make a differance?

out of curiosity, has the assault weapons ban that has expired affected any of these types of guns sales? Is it legal for me to obtain a license to have an automatic or burst fire version of any of these?
I don't think many colllege girls want to date nerds with big gun...they want the real thing instead of a toy 😉
For the few times that you use the gun it is better last...any gun should more than last your life time.
It sound like you are looking for a very dangerous toy instead of security.

Join or call your local gun club & ask for their professional opinion.

Actually there are still many that will allow it, as long as it's legal for you otherwise.

Depends on the particular .223 round and the range/velocity at impact.
