Assault on a police officer

Lets say I beat up someone randomly on the street and the person just happened to be an off duty police officer. Would I be charged for Assualt on an officer fo the law?

P.S. No, I didn't actually beat any one up.

Depends on if he identifies himself as law enforcement or not before hand?

Maybe not.

Crazy question. You thinking of doing something retarded?

You won't be charged with assualting an officer, unless it was made clear to you that he/she is an officer.
Though if you do start beating up people randomly I seriously hope an officer will be the first one you run in to, I'm sure they'll know what to with you with enough efficiency.

Yes, I plan to beat up random people on the street, but I don't want to get in trouble if I accidentally beat up a cop.

Actually, I was watching a movie and was curious because some guy got in trouble for assault on an officer, but the officer was off duty. I just don't think it's really fair if the person didn't know that guy was a cop.

Who would've thought that a movie does not accurately depict real life?!?!?

Ah.. dude, maybe I wasn't clear on something, but beating up someone RANDOMLY on the street would probably get you into a lot more trouble than 'just' beating up an officer. Have fun.

Probably depends on the region you live in. Beat up a cop in Chicago and you may end up dead very soon.
