Hey All,

So I have this board and right now I have a 120mm case fan plugged into this header that sits right over the CPU, wondering if this header is for anything specific (have read that they are usually for PS fans that are monitored but my PS doesn't have one)

Can this be used as a standard header?

Thanks

You should be able to use it without any issues. Might even be able to contol fan speed in bios also....You'd have to check.

You read correctly, although I have never seen a psu that offers this functionality (maybe some server psu's?).

It can be used as a regular fan header just fine except usually they don't offer any fanspeed control.

It prolly true. The 3-pin fan lacks the control option while a 4-pin no matter what kind of fan has got the bios control. Then there is voltage control of fans that you can do with a fan controller. They are quite cheap. :)

Check google images

PS - Lots of bioses lets you control the fans on the mobo not just the cpu fan.

btw you can plug a 3-pin fan in a 4-pin socket, but you won't get any voltage control.

Actually 3 or 4 pins has nothing to do with being able to control or not. Normal 3-pin fans can be controlled just fine by changing the supplied voltage, but since a pwr fanheader is intended to be used only for reading out rpm most motherboard manufacturers don't bother with adding voltage control circuitry for this header.
