Think I've finally made my motherboard choice in the above. Interested if anyone has used it and any memory recommendations (currently thinking about some ddr4 3200 gskill).

The smart route would be to use memory on Asrock's memory list, or go to the G Skill website and use their RAM configurator on what sticks are tested to work on your motherboard.

Their Trident Z premium line is well reviewed for quality, but there is such little difference in performance once you go over DDR4 3000 unless you are using onboard graphics.

The asrock list lacks a clarity to easily understand how they list the modules and gskill doesn't have this particular model on theirs.

You are right about G Skill not listing that board.

However, I just checked Asrock's list, and you can sort it by ram size, speed, and manufacturer.

This module was listed right on there:

But for the speed I was looking at, why does it show almost only 4gb modules?

Eh, almost any DDR4 will work according to specs on any DDR4-compatible LGA1151 board ,as long as all modules are part of the same kit. Memory QVL is not that important.

@lupi - G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-3200 16-16-16-36 1.35V $80. Or lower voltages at a lower price: G.Skill Ripjaws V DDR4-2800 17-17-17-37 1.2V $65

First set is the pair I was looking at.

While a majority of ram will work, there have been and still are people having issues with ram compatibility. I still help people in computer help and general hardware who still with some RAM issues. In fact, there was one less than a week ago. That motherboard has only had one BIOS update to improve RAM compatibility in January. Many other boards have had many BIOS updates improving RAM compatibility and still are releasing new updates specifically for RAM (including my Gigabyte board which has had several). I'm not sure why they would release those updates if all ram worked perfectly.

The ram could very well work just fine, and maybe Asrock simply didn't test it in the size you are looking at. Maybe it had issues. Who knows except for Asrock. I guess the worst that could happen is you get it and it doesn't work. You can simply send it back and order another one that's on the list.

The one I linked to was $90 and the one lehtv linked to is $80.

Your time and your choice. I was just trying to help.

EDIT:

I also did notice a review on the $80 ram you liked at the Newegg link:

Cons: Loses a star for not running XMP settings immediately out of the box, with XMP settings unreliable at 3200. I do have the ideal system for this memory (Skylake 6700K, ASRock Z170M Extreme4, plus this kit, all from Newegg), but initially I found this kit would only work reliably at 2666 mhz. However, once I raised vccsa to 1.2 volts, vssio to 1.2, and pch to 1.1 (in the BIOS), the XMP settings (16-16-16-36) suddenly started working flawlessly at both 3200 and 3333 mhz, with the normal dimm voltage of 1.35. Other reviewers with similar complaints were likely unaware of these additional adjustments.

Manufacturer Response:
.
Hi Chris

Thank you for your G.Skill purchase and review. Glad to hear you were able to get the system to run flawlessly with this memory kit. Currently, the AsRock Z170M Extreme 4 motherboard is not on the G.Skill QVL list for this RAM, so the XMP Profile is not certified to work without additional tweaks. Check to see if you have the latest BIOS. Hopefully an update is released so additional tweaks are not necessary. Now that you have general OC knowledge for this platform, we are certain you can achieve outstanding results. With 16GB of DDR4-3200+, you will have one of the fastest desktops computers money can buy. For any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us directly.

Thank you
