Asrock stability issue

I'm upgrading a family members computer and want them to get the most out of thier CPU since it's just a gaming machine. But this is weird. Opteron 146 CABYE 0540FPAW @2.73GHz 12Hrs prime stable. Even at just 2.4GHz though, the http://64seconds.com/ page will hard crash the computer instantly. Like, click the link and BAM! POST screen. vcore max for the board is only 1.45v and I won't raise it any higher even if the option was there.

This looks like one of the websites that some people were having problems loading at 1T timings.

Just tested the webpage with an asrock 939 1t timings, it crashes.

I see. Oh well, she had a limited budget and wanted to keep her 9800 pro. Most of the games she plays are cpu limited.

The page loads fine at <2.33GHz, but the CPU itself is prime stable at the boards maximum HTT setting for 2.74GHz.

It's the motherboard Mark, unless you have your X2 on an AsRock 939Dual-SATA2

Should I run the CPU at 2.33GHz 1T or 2.74GHz 2T? Hmm.

2.33 or 2.7, it actually wont make much difference since she'll be GPU limited with a 9800pro (unless she only plays older games or something). You could try one then the other and let her decide which feels faster. Personally I'd stick with 2.33 for the lower heat and lower stress on the motherboard.

Ribbon, I have seen this happen to me. The issue seems to be related to certain(I believe most) AGP cards and Asrock 939-SATA2 mobo's AGP drivers. My machine will also suddenly reboot when I would go to a website having flash or java script. I did solve the problem however, by putting in a PCI-Express card. With my c3D gto the machine works just fine, no random reboot etc. Oh yeah I am also using 1T A64 3200@2500 with 1GB of PQI Turbo DDR4400 ram.

Checkout the Asrock 939-sata2 forums at ocworkbench, you will find many other people with the same symptoms. I had problems with both my 6800 and fx 5500 AGP card.

What greenwar said.

My system will run Prime95-stable at 11X250 with 1T command rate - but will crash immediately with page-fault in the real world (Macromedia, print a Windows printer test page, etc.).

Memtest86 Test#8 is the acid test.

With my components, I must run @ 2T at any memory clock speed above 133MHz.

I've found no BIOS to cure this problem (currently running ocwbeta3 BIOS).

Hope this helps!

OCW3 bios as well. I can run 10x233 with DDR400 2-2-2-7 1T 64seconds stable. Lol since that seems to be a better indicator than prime95. 10x234 and firefox crashes. 10x235 and BSOD. 10x236 POST screen.

If I lower to 2T I can reach 10x274(motherboard max) 64seconds stable. But I think I'll stick to the 10x233 anyway.

until there's a solution to the 1T problem. Also this is the first I've heard it's related to the ASRock AGP driver - interesting. Could be fixed with a future driver update then, rather than a new BIOS? Here's hoping.

Have you tried memtest86 at the 2.33 1T settings?

I will try memtest86 soon. Currently the board is collecting dust. I will fire it up to see if memtest86 goes through with 250Mhz fsb at 1T.

Not sure if its really an AGP driver or bios issue, but my problem was solved right after I put in the pci-e card. Perhaps people with AGP card on this board can attest to this.

Yeah, just got my board today. I'll be using it with my AGP X800 XT - really wish I could run at 1T, here's hoping.

The board hasn't crashed once at stock 1T. And Who is anyone to expect more than a 333Mhz stable overclock and while being cheap and sticking with AGP cards? I'm not booing Asus's little budget division for being just that. It's still the best $270 she ever spent on her computer.

Whats is the real world speed difference between 1T and 2T in games or other?

I'm aware of that: 6% worse RAM + 15% better CPU

but stock cooler and not my machine, plus i'm the liable 3am tech who'd have to hear 'i made an awesome map for age of wonders, blah blah it crashed, blah, it's your fault, fix it' and such, I'll stick to the 2.3 anyways because the most I was going to push it when its packaged up for her is 2.4Ghz

Page loads fine for me, except I'm running 2T and using XP64 which doesn't have Flash. :D

Read sig for post details. ;)
